Sinopsis

Abandoned Skyscrapers explores the intriguing stories behind unfinished or repurposed high-rises, examining why these architectural marvels sometimes fail to meet their intended purpose. These structures, initially symbols of progress, often become testaments to economic downturns, technological limitations, and shifting social landscapes.

From the infamous Ryugyong Hotel in North Korea to the Torre David in Venezuela, the book delves into the complex reasons behind their abandonment or adaptation, providing insight into the volatile nature of urban development.

The book uniquely approaches the topic by viewing these skyscrapers not as failures, but as indicators of the dynamic forces shaping our cities. It investigates economic factors like bursting speculative bubbles, technological challenges such as outdated designs, and social factors including changing urban priorities.

By combining historical analysis with architectural theory, Abandoned Skyscrapers offers a comprehensive look at how and why these ambitious projects falter.

The book progresses by first introducing the "failed skyscraper" concept with a historical overview, then moves into specific case studies, and concludes by synthesizing findings to identify trends and potential strategies for preventing future failures and repurposing existing structures.

Through archival research, architectural plans, and on-site investigations, it highlights the importance of sustainable development and responsible urban planning in the context of these architectural mishaps.

In the spirit of medieval writer Chaucer, all human activity lies within the artist’s scope, the History of Man Series uses medicine as a jumping off point to explore precisely that, all history, all science, all human activity since the beginning of time. The jumping off style of writing takes the reader, the listener into worlds unknown, always returning to base, only to jump off again. History of Man are stories and tales of nearly everything.
The Second History of Man focuses mostly on bacteria and bacterial infections as the foundation, jumping off into Darwin and evolution, gin & tonics and the discovery of the first antibiotic to treat infection (and it wasn’t penicillin), visiting with those clever chaps who cook up drugs in the lab. We’ll call upon poets & poetry, celebrities like Frank Sinatra, the Rat Pack, and Bobby Darin, the classical music of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, the tragic story of World War II, Anne Frank and the Holocaust, tuberculosis, and a few of the rich & famous who suffered from TB, travelling back in time to the Black Death which wiped out 25 percent of humans on Earth, exploring the origins of a salon and a saloon, Columbus and the Age of Discovery, the lost generations of childhood, ending with the invention of the Internet.

Malta’s history goes back further than many know, which can be attested to by the numerous Neolithic and Bronze Age era megaliths that dot the island of Malta proper as well as the island of Gozo to the north. Naturally, when European archaeologists began unearthing the megaliths of Malta in the 19th century, they did not know what to think, which led to a plethora of theories, many of them quite fantastic. At least 23 of these temples were uncovered, but because the people who built them lacked the knowledge of writing, speculation over who built them and why remained well into the 20th century (Rountree 2003, 26). Some people theorized that the Malta megaliths were built by a race of giants, while others believed that it was the center of a “Mother Earth” cult that later spread through Neolithic Europe.
Early archaeologists were also perplexed about the physical origins of the Maltese megalith builders. Because Malta is such an isolated location, the builders had to have migrated there from elsewhere, but debates raged over the location. Equally confusing was when the megaliths were built. Although most legitimate historians believed from an early time that they were Neolithic structures, some argued that they were built much later and influenced by the Minoans and/or the Mycenaeans.
Even as some answers have arrived, scholars still debate the purpose of the megaliths. Although there is a near consensus that they served as religious temples, the deities that were worshiped as well as the rituals carried out in the structures remain a mystery and sources of further debate. As such, the ancient monuments remain enigmatic and serve as sources of pride for the modern Maltese people and awe-inspiring to all those who visit them.
