The Rebel Yell was a battle cry used by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. The yell was hollered when soldiers were charging into battle, as a way to intimidate the enemy and to boost their own morale. There is some debate about how the Rebel Yell began. Confederate soldiers may have learned the yell from Native Americans, or simply imitated them. It is known that some Texas Confederate units combined Comanche war whoops into their version of the yell. Another claim is that it came from the screams traditionally made by Irish and Scottish Highlanders when they made a Highland charge during battle. According to Encyclopedia Virginia: "Distinctive noises made by soldiers were identified from the very beginning of the war, but the yell’s first appearance in combat may have come at the Battle of Manassas, on July 21, 1861, and it is strongly associated with the Confederate general Stonewall Jackson." Colonel Keller Anderson of Kentucky's Orphan Brigade said: "Then arose that do-or-die expression, that maniacal maelstrom of sound; that penetrating, rasping, shrieking, blood-curdling noise that could be heard for miles and whose volume reached the heavens--such an expression as never yet came from the throats of sane men, but from men whom the seething blast of an imaginary hell would not check while the sound lasted."

The author visited the archives of the headquarters of A.A. in New York, and discovered new communications between Carl Jung and Bill Wilson. For the first time this correspondence shows Jung's respect for A.A. and in turn, its influence on him. In particular, this research shows how Bill Wilson was encouraged by Jung's writings to promote the spiritual aspect of recovery as opposed to the conventional medical model which has failed so abysmally. The book overturns the long-held belief that Jung distrusted groups. Indeed, influenced by A.A.'s success, Jung gave "complete and detailed instructions" on how the A.A. group format could be developed further and used by "general neurotics". Wilson was an advocate of treating some alcoholics with LSD in order to deflate the ego and induce a spiritual experience. The author explains how alcoholism can be diagnosed and understood by professionals and the lay person; by examining the detailed case histories of Jung, the author gives graphic examples of its psychological and behavioural manifestations.

This audiobook is expertly read and engineered by Peter Coates. It was produced and published by Echo Point Books & Media, an independent bookseller in Brattleboro, Vermont.

A Drama in Mexico is a vivid and engaging short work by Charles Dickens that combines travel writing with historical reflection. Based on Dickens's experiences and observations during his journey to North America, the piece offers a sharply written account of a real-life political execution he witnessed while in Mexico.

Through powerful narrative detail, Dickens recounts the tense atmosphere surrounding the public execution of a political figure, capturing the emotional weight of the moment and the reactions of the crowd. Rather than focusing solely on the event itself, the story reflects Dickens's deep concern with justice, authority, and the human cost of political conflict.

The work stands out for its immediacy and moral seriousness. Dickens uses the event as a lens through which to examine themes of power, violence, and public spectacle, questioning the effectiveness and humanity of capital punishment. His prose is direct and compelling, blending journalistic observation with emotional insight.

A Drama in Mexico is a striking example of Dickens's ability to transform real-world experiences into meaningful commentary. Short yet impactful, the piece offers readers a rare glimpse into Dickens as an eyewitness to history and serves as a thought-provoking reflection on justice, punishment, and human dignity.

Renowned public speaker, bestselling author, social critic, and activist Charles Eisenstein offers a way forward from our present moment through a series of unforgettable essays that give us a new model of sense-making. Through a series of piercing essays, The Coronation takes listeners through the initiation of the Covid era?exploring topics like despair, hope, courage, division, and reunion?in this stunning collection. Paired with each essay is the author’s commentary locating the essay in a social, political, and spiritual journey. After all, it wasn’t only outward normality that the pandemic disrupted. Of all the social crises that COVID-19 has revealed, The Coronation addresses the most profound: the crisis in our sense-making. An old reality has disintegrated. This book reveals just how deep that breakdown is. Acknowledging it, we might build something more sound, more whole, and more sane. Underneath the shifting sands of the arguments and narratives, something else calls to us: the possibility of renewal, a revolution in the agreements and myths that organize society. *Individually, these essays have been read, shared, and discussed by tens of thousands of people around the globe, but they are collected together here for the first time!

Queen Elizabeth I's reign is amongst the most exciting and fascinating of any period of English history. She was a glamourous queen who ruled a vibrant nation full of legendary figures: Robert Dudley, Francis Drake, Walter Raleigh, the Earl of Essex were all international celebrities of their day. Great events unfolded, with triumphs such as the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and tragedies, including the long-term imprisonment and execution of Mary Queen of Scots.
With love affairs, wily politicians, sinister plots and intrigues at the royal court, Elizabeth's reign was a long-running drama; it is appropriate that William Shakespeare was writing at the time, and characters and events of his plays often mirrored Elizabethan life. But it was Queen Elizabeth who was the star of the story, holding centre stage over a glittering royal court.
In this seminal Pitkin text by G.W.O. Woodward, revised and updated by Gill Knappett for 2019, read how Gloriana reigned in dazzling majesty over an exciting new age of exploration, discovery, artistic brilliance, architectural achievement, foreign conquest and prosperity.
This beautifully illustrated biography is part of the Pitkin Royal Collection series, celebrating the lives of the British royal family. Other notable titles in this insightful series include Royal Babies, The Queen and Her Family and Queen Elizabeth II.
