Sinopsis

"GORM Development Techniques""GORM Development Techniques" is a comprehensive guide dedicated to mastering advanced application development using GORM, Go's powerful Object-Relational Mapping library. This book begins with an in-depth exploration of GORM’s core architecture, illuminating the internal mechanics, data flows, and reflection-based paradigms that underpin its robust ORM capabilities. Through clear explanations of concurrency, error management, and an extensible plugin infrastructure, readers are equipped to build resilient, scalable, and easily maintainable data-driven applications.Moving beyond fundamentals, the book systematically covers sophisticated model design, relationship management, and query optimization. Readers learn to craft expressive and high-performance Go struct models, implement complex associations—including cyclic and recursive relations—and leverage advanced querying techniques integrating raw SQL, dynamic filters, and bulk operations. Performance engineering is addressed extensively, with detailed strategies for caching, indexing, memory management, and leveraging Go’s concurrency patterns for scalable workflows.Practical attention is devoted to every stage of the application lifecycle, from automated schema migrations and rigorous testing to observability, debugging, and high-level security. The final chapters focus on extending GORM through custom plugins, integration with cloud platforms, and solving real-world architectural challenges such as multi-tenancy, GDPR compliance, and Distributed Domain-Driven Design. Supported by hands-on case studies, "GORM Development Techniques" is an indispensable resource for Go developers seeking to elevate their mastery of GORM to build performant, compliant, and enterprise-ready applications.

Call of the Kingfisher - Bright...

Call of the Kingfisher is the enchanting debut from composer and wildlife recordist Nick Penny. This love letter to a short stretch of Northamptonshire's River Nene celebrates all the wild things that live there, especially the kingfishers. Nick has walked beside the river at Oundle for four decades. But for a whole year he gave the waterway all the time it asked for. The more attention he gave it, the more he saw the kingfishers and heard their high whistling calls. Set in a lovely but little-known part of England, Call of the Kingfisher relates a year by the river, the author's experiences there and the different people he meets. Other strands are woven around the elusive feathered protagonist: explorations of local history and landscape, from Roman and Bronze Age sites to watermills and centuries-old stone churches; visits at different times and to different places in the valley; homages to naturalists who lived nearby; forest dawns and dusks listening to the precious song of nightingales. But the background tapestry is the sights and sounds, and greens and browns, of the riverbank, shot through with the blue and orange threads of a kingfisher's glowing feathers. As a composer and wildlife recordist, Nick has a deep interest in sounds in the natural environment. He uses the local landscape and wildlife sounds as inspiration, and brings fresh insights into the sounds of the countryside. The book includes access to a number of high-quality birdsong recordings made alongside the River Nene - audio soundbites of nature's riches, from kingfishers and nightingales to owls and cuckoos. This is a book about the things that can be seen and heard when we approach nature with patience and curiosity. It celebrates people who have used that focus to help preserve wildlife and pass on their knowledge to future generations. Above all, Call of the Kingfisher serves as a call to appreciate what we've got, wherever we are, and to use our ears as much as our eyes when we experience the natural world.

On February 1, the Columbia was due to land at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 09:16. Only a few members of the press were present to watch the landing - this was, after all, supposed to be a routine return from a routine mission, the 113th for the shuttle program and the 28th for Columbia, one of the oldest Space Shuttles.
Reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere is always the most dangerous part of any space mission. The intense heat generated as a spacecraft enters the thin upper atmosphere at immense speed can be potentially lethal, but the shuttle was designed to deal with this heat, and Columbia had successfully done it 27 times in the past. For the five men and two women on board and the members of the press present, everything seemed normal, but there was a measure of concern among those in the ground control team. The team was aware that Columbia had possibly suffered damage to the thermal tiles forming the heat shield on one wing soon after liftoff, but no one knew how extensive the damage was or even if it existed at all. There was also some disagreement about how serious it might be - some on the ground were concerned this might compromise the shuttle wing’s ability to resist the heat of reentry, while others were sure it was a minor issue that would have no serious impact on the mission. Videos of the launch had been exhaustively reviewed by engineers on the ground, but it was impossible to be certain of the precise level of damage to the heat shielding on the underside and leading edge of the wing.
There was no agreement on what should or could be done, so one thing was universally agreed upon: the crew would not be informed of the problem. There was nothing they could do to make repairs and no way to avoid reentry.
