Sinopsis

In 'The English Rogue: Continued in the Life of Meriton Latroon, and Other Extravagants: The Second Part,' readers are invited into a vibrant tapestry of roguish adventures set against the backdrop of 17th-century England. The collection skillfully encapsulates the period's complex societal layers, with narratives that range from the comic to the scandalous, and the introspective to the farcical. A mosaic of literary styles—from picaresque tales to satirical narratives—captures the dynamic and sometimes chaotic spirit of Restoration literature. Among the standout elements is the mosaic-like diversity that reflects the broader cultural phenomena of the time, hinting at a society in flux yet full of vitality. Richard Head and Francis Kirkman, the notable figures behind this collection, were key contributors to the literary landscape of their era. As pioneers of the English picaresque tradition, they expand the genre with their blend of fiction and social commentary. Their works are imbued with the Restoration's keen interest in individuality and moral ambiguity, offering observations that remain relevant today. Their narratives illuminate not just personal escapades but serve as a mirror to the contradictions and delights of their historical context, thereby enriching the anthology with depth. This anthology is a treasure trove for readers eager to explore the complexities of human behavior through an array of lively escapades and reflective moments. The collaboration of Head and Kirkman materially contributes to expanding the narrative canon, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the interplay of wit and wisdom. Beyond entertainment, 'The English Rogue' serves as a critical educational resource, opening avenues for dialogue about broader themes of deception, identity, and societal norms, meriting its place on the scholar's shelf.

Little Matsue and Other Tales encompasses a magnificent thread of entangled journeys of acceptance and resignation, but also longing, and resolution. The uniqueness of each story comes from Larry Boyd’s intricate and vivid storytelling, which allows the reader to effortlessly step into the point of view of the characters and connect to their most nuanced emotions. From the graphic, imaginative way a little girl interprets the world around her, to the surprisingly relatable dynamics displayed by a family of fish, Little Matsue and Other Tales brings about the perfect blend between realistic and fictional narratives.
‘Boyd boldly dances through that liminal space between child and adult until your eyes leak and your body aches. Fiercely imaginative, Little Matsue, will have you whizzing through kingdoms and time, writhing with rage, seduced by new love and building with dinosaur bones. You will laugh at the Oceanic Olympics as much as you will mourn for the strong woman you’ve just met lying in the grave. This book is insightful, a little mad and deeply enjoyable.’ Kate Liston-Mills, Dear Ibis
‘A gifted storyteller with a wry, original view, Larry Boyd is equally at ease in the worlds of 12th century China or the hip-hop community. His wonderfully diverse stories are full of sly humour and unexpected twists. There’s the tragedy of a daughter of a Polish migrant navigating Australian Christmas at its ugliest, the misadventure of a servant in feudal Japan and even an ironic take on fishy tales. Boyd gets inside his characters; a child fantasising to escape feuding parents, a father struggling with his role as his baby son’s primary carer, a teenage music student inspired by his first sexual experience. This is story telling at its traditional best.’

A masterpiece of storytelling, this epic saga pits Ahab, a brooding and fantastical sea captain, against the great white whale that crippled him. In telling the tale of Ahab's passion for revenge and the fateful voyage that ensued, Melville produced far more than the narrative of a hair-raising journey; Moby-Dick is a tale for the ages that sounds the deepest depths of the human soul.
Interspersed with graphic sketches of life aboard a whaling vessel, and a wealth of information on whales and 19th-century whaling, Melville's greatest work presents an imaginative and thrilling picture of life at sea, as well as a portrait of heroic determination. The author's keen powers of observation and firsthand knowledge of shipboard life (he served aboard a whaler himself) were key ingredients in crafting a maritime story that dramatically examines the conflict between man and nature.
“A valuable addition to the literature of the day,” said American journalist Horace Greeley on the publication of Moby-Dick in 1851 — a classic piece of understatement about a literary classic now considered by many as “the great American novel.” Read and pondered by generations, the novel remains an unsurpassed account of the ultimate human struggle against the indifference of nature and the awful power of fate.
