Summary

Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them - Ephesians 5:8

Deep within the forgotten and misty moorlands of Yorkshire, the secluded village of Middleton Kirkby unknowingly plays host to a dark secret. Malevolent, malignant and patient, It waits as if dormant for the next generation of an ancient family to make their Payment.

When the Esquire of Middleton Kirkby returns home to his manor and life of near isolation after a period of time away he finds he is not as abandoned as he always thought. As much as he may try to resist, he realises he cannot keep from making his Payment forever.

Payment is the first published work by Rhys N Rivers. Rivers, a veteran of the British Armed Forces, is making his way on a part-time basis through the dozens of fictional ideas conceived as a teenager and during service. Payment evolved from a short story entered in a horror fiction competition in 2017 on fanstory.com and the reviews and comments kindly received encouraged Rivers to develop the idea into a full-length novel.

“…very well penned. It reminded me of E.A. Poe.”

“I love Poe…many horrifying images…horror theme runs well throughout…”

For millennia, they have held the gates of Hell shut against the darkness. But now they’re gone… and the gates are swinging wide.
When Morgan Sierra receives a package with a note from her father — murdered in a suicide bombing years ago — she goes on high alert. As an agent of ARKANE, the secret organization tasked with investigating the supernatural, Morgan has seen unusual things like this before. But even she isn’t prepared to face the danger that’s coming… from her own past.
Her father’s death was no accident. A member of the Remnant — a group of holy men schooled in the deepest mysteries of Kabbalah — her father was one of those charged with protecting our world from the demons that want to take it; to keep sealed the gates of Hell.
But the Remnant is dying, its members murdered by Adam Kadmon: a man once groomed to lead the Remnant before turning to twisted paths of power. Kadmon wants to open the portal between our world and Hell, to create a twisted, demonic version of our world over which he will reign supreme.
Now, Morgan and her partner — Jake Timber, the enigmatic agent who recruited her for ARKANE — are on the run. From the holiest cities in Israel to underwater cities lost to history, they must follow this trail to the end. To find a way to stop Kadmon before he offers the final sacrifice. A sacrifice of pain. A sacrifice of blood. A sacrifice of one of the children of the Remnant.
Kadmon intends to spill the blood of Morgan Sierra… and open wide the Gates of Hell.
Gates of Hell is the sixth installment in the bestselling ARKANE series by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author J.F. Penn. Listen as part of the series, or as a standalone adventure.

Enjoy this short story by Mace Styx:
Standing in a room filled with sharp and heavy objects I had seen some form of I don’t know what, an apparition? A ghost? Yet, I had not been harmed. Standing stock still, I considered. In those stories, those urban legends and public warnings about the dangers of discarded appliances there was no malevolent element, no wicked long toothed demon emerging through the wires. Shaking my head and sure that I would probably regret the decision, I did possibly the bravest and possibly the stupidest thing I have ever done. I went back into the room.
The fridge door was still wide open, the gaping chasm and its grisly contents shielded from view. Holding the top of the door I stepped around it and again reluctantly peered inside. Lank, innocent celery, days old bean salad and the same squat, mocking tomatoes. Nothing sinister. I closed the fridge door and was oddly unsurprised to find that the letters had changed once again. This time, to a name. “David Franks”, and a set of numbers. Numbers, I almost recognized.
C2,31A was the name of the uber-cool cafe close to the university, where I would spend half of my time studying and the other half trying to pick up chicks. The cafe’s odd name, in a too clever decision achingly desperate to be hipster, was the grid reference in the A to Z road map under which the cafe’s location fell. Square C2 along the top, 31 A along the side. Find that grid reference on the map and ‘tada’! You would find the cafe. The numbers on my fridge were C2, 31B, which I knew, even without looking, would be the grid reference for the cemetery next door. What else could I do?

A twisted relationship between two couples reaches a terrible climax in this novel by the New York Times-bestselling author of Machines Like Me.   Colin and Mary are lovers on holiday in Italy, their relationship becoming increasingly problematic as they become increasingly alienated from one and other. They move from place to place in this foreign land but seemingly without aim or purpose, seemingly bored and without attachment. Then they meet a man named Robert and his disabled wife, Caroline.   Colin and Mary seem happy for the diversion—happy to meet another couple that takes their focus off of each other for a while. But things become strange when they attempt to leave: Robert and Caroline insist that they stay with them for a while longer. While Mary and Colin do rediscover an erotic attraction to each other during this time, they also find that their relationship with Robert and Caroline is taking a dreadful and horrific turn, in this “fine novel” by the Booker Prize-winning author of Saturday and On Chesil Beach (New Statesman).   “McEwan perfectly captures the thrill of travel when one is divorced from familiar surroundings and the chance of something unusual and out-of-character seems possible. Of course, this being a McEwan fiction, the possibility is a brutal truth about how people find love in extreme ways.”—The Daily Beast

Gear up for a frightful jaunt into the darkest reaches of the ancient Appalachians.
Folks deep within the Appalachian hollers lean close to the campfire to share stories of the inexplicable with hushed awe. Monsters rumbling in the hills. Strange lights darting through the pitch-black night sky. Horrible occurrences, almost ineffable in their bizarre tragedy.
    "Tall tales," you might say.
Tell that to the Flatwoods monster in Braxton County, West Virginia. Or the Goat Man of Louisville—look into his humanoid eyes and let him know you don't believe. And what of those apparitions in Mammoth Cave's Corpse Rock, or the Satan-spawn known as the Jersey Devil that attacked a trolley car? How do you respond when confronted by these mysteries?
From metaphysical energy that swirls near the Serpent Mound in Ohio to Point Pleasant's Mothman legacy, Mark Muncy and Kari Schultz explore the dark history lurking in the shadows of Appalachia.
Ready by Mark Muncy, author and expert on the strange with appearances on shows such as Ancient Aliens, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Return of Robert the Doll, and more!
