Sinopse

From a four-year-old in a seersucker suit dreaming of being Ben Matlock to a seasoned investigator taking on one of California’s most powerful institutions, Gary Reid Galbreath’s journey toward justice took an unexpected turn when he discovered corruption at the heart of the California State Lottery. This riveting memoir exposes what happens when one man’s dedication to truth collides with a system designed to protect itself.

As a decorated law enforcement officer turned lottery investigator, Galbreath uncovered disturbing evidence of misappropriated funds and fraud schemes targeting California’s most vulnerable residents. But when he dug deeper, he found himself labeled a whistleblower and fired by the very officials he was investigating—the same ones who had praised his investigative skills just months earlier.

Through Galbreath’s candid narrative, readers get an insider’s view of the price of integrity in a system where looking the other way is often the easier choice. He details how his “unauthorized investigation” into corruption led to his termination, the years-long battle for vindication, and his ultimate settlement with the state.

More than just an exposé, this is a story about standing up for what’s right when the odds are stacked against you. From the investigation that ended his career to the aftermath that tested his resolve, Galbreath’s account reveals the personal cost of exposing institutional corruption and the importance of maintaining one’s principles in the face of adversity.

In the 1920s, plans were made to carve the figures of America's greatest presidents into Mount Rushmore, the tallest spot in the Black Hills of the Dakotas. By 1939 the faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt had been carved into the rock, and one of America's greatest national monuments was born.
The four men were certainly worthy of being immortalized in granite. Every American is taught a pristine narrative of the life and legacy of George Washington and can easily recite the highlights and myths of Washington's life. Thomas Jefferson was instrumental in authoring the Declaration of Independence, laying out the ideological groundwork of the notion of states’ rights, leading one of the first political parties, and overseeing the expansion of the United States during his presidency. Schoolchildren can recite the life story of Lincoln, the “Westerner” who educated himself and became a self made man, rising from lawyer to leader of the new Republican Party before becoming the 16th President of the United States and saving the Union. And at the turn of the 20th century, Theodore Roosevelt came to be recognized as the quintessential American, remembered for being a president, explorer, hunter, author, soldier, president, and safari adventurer, all of which combine into one unique reputation.
Mount Rushmore poignantly symbolizes the legacies and legends of these men, which often overshadow the actual men themselves. In addition to covering all of the accomplishments and the growing legacies of these 4 presidents,

Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was born on 1st April 1809 to a father, descended from Ukrainian Cossacks and a mother with a military background in the Ukrainian town of Sorochyntsi, then part of the Russian Empire and rich in Cossack traditions and folklore.

His father wrote poetry and plays which the young Gogol helped stage at his uncle’s home theatre. This helped ignite in him a love of literature and blossomed when he attended, what is now, the Nizhyn Gogol State University at the age of 12. Here he participated in school theatre productions and refined his mastery of his native Ukrainian and also the Russian of his Imperial masters.

In 1828 he went to St Petersburg and unsuccessfully tried to begin a career as an actor after finding that with no money and no connections the civil service was barred to him.

Embezzling money from his mother he embarked on a trip to Germany. When the money ran out, he returned to St Petersburg but the experiences were used in a series of stories he contributed to periodicals. These tales were steeped in his childhood memories of the Ukrainian landscape and peasantry enlivened with the supernatural of its folklore woven with realistic events of the day. He wrote in Russian in a whimsical, colloquial style with a smattering of Ukrainian words and phrases that provided an authenticity. Eight stories were published as ‘Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka’. Seemingly all at once fame and fortune arrived. Gogol was hailed by his contemporaries, including Pushkin, as a pre-eminent writer of Russian literature.

His success continued with his brilliant plays ‘The Inspector General’ and the comedy ‘The Marriage for the Theatre’, both being highly acclaimed.

In 1834 he became Professor of Medieval History at the University of St. Petersburg but with little academic or teacher training, failed to adequately fulfil many of his duties and soon resigned this post. With no obligations and using his earnings from his writing, which now included the impressionistic and immortal ‘Dead Souls’, Gogol travelled around Europe, spending the most time in Rome where he studied art, read Italian literature and developed a passion for opera.

In the 1840s Gogol became preoccupied with a need to purify his soul and embarked on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. In tandem he fell under the influence of a strict and austere spiritual ascetic who persuaded him to observe strict fasts that, allied with his depression and deteriorating health, contributed to his death on 21st April 1852 at the age of only 43.

In the Nose Gogol reaches out with the absurd premise that a Nose can have, and enjoy, a life of its own regardless of the complications and consequences to its former owner.

Beyond the Horizon: How Intelligence Limits Led to the Pearl Harbor Failure offers a compelling analysis of one of history's most infamous intelligence failures — the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Drawing on historical evidence and cognitive science, this thesis explores the systemic issues in U.S. intelligence operations leading up to the attack, including shortcomings in collection, analysis, and management.
These failures were not solely the result of institutional flaws but were deeply rooted in human decision-making's inherent cognitive and behavioral limitations. The book highlights how intelligence professionals can learn from the past to anticipate and mitigate future threats by uncovering these constraints.
Packed with insightful lessons and actionable recommendations, Beyond the Horizon is a vital resource for intelligence officers, policymakers, and historians. It emphasizes the importance of adapting to human limitations to protect against potential surprises.

The Stewart Dynasty in Scotland series aims to bring the rich political heritage of late medieval and early modern Scotland before as wide a reading public as possible, with specialist authors writing for the general reader as well as the student or academic. This volume is number one in the series and is also the first scholarly biography of the two kings who established medieval Scotland’s most famous and durable royal dynasty. Robert II, long regarded as a weak and ineffective king, pursued a determined political and propaganda campaign which largely overcame initial political opposition. Robert III was forced to engage in a long-term struggle with his brother Albany for control of the kingdom. Firmly based on contemporary documentary sources, Stephen Boardman's study examines the ways in which the unjustly poor reputations of both kings grew from later embellishments to contemporary political propaganda.
