Up from Slavery is the 1901 autobiography of Booker T. Washington sharing his personal experience of having to work to rise up from the position of a slave child during the Civil War, to the difficulties and obstacles he overcame to get an education at the new Hampton Institute, to his work establishing the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama to help black people learn useful, marketable skills and work to pull themselves up by the bootstraps. He reflects on the generosity of both teachers and philanthropists who helped in educating blacks and Native Americans. He describes his efforts to instill manners, breeding, health and a feeling of dignity to students. Booker Taliaferro Washington was an American educator, author, orator, and adviser to several presidents of the United States. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African-American community and of the contemporary black elite.

This story tells of my pioneer colonist forebears and their arrival and settlement in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1838 after many difficult months at sea. They landed only a year after the proclamation of the city of Adelaide. At this time houses were made from reeds from the banks of Adelaide's Torrens River, the port of Adelaide was surrounded by swamp with the area referred to in those early days as "Mudholia" or "Dustholia". During this time some colonial children mixed with local Aboriginal children, in some caeses learning part of their language. This story talks about Adelaide's rapid early development and in particular follows the fortunes of the illustrious Downer family.

Singapore Literature Prize winner Yong Shu Hoong’s latest book features more than just poetry. There is also a ghostly tale at its core, complete with prose poems and micro fiction of exactly 100 words each, as well as annotated excerpts from an abandoned work.

In this viewing party, readers are invited to take a peek into the domain of death and cinema. You are part of a mob of dispassionate onlookers. Sometimes, you get to play the voyeuristic judge.

Winner of the 2014 Singapore Literature Prize for English Poetry

“There’s a warm easiness to Yong’s voice that’s balanced by a sharpness of insight. He cuts through the layers of familial and social habit to the unseen images and urges that give the mundane the sheen of the numinous. If the book is a viewing party, Yong is a genial and attentive host, inviting us in to absorbing scenes of everyday curiosity and surprise.”

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
At first, it was just a smell drifting through a quiet apartment building. Then came the missing boys. Then came the truth—so horrifying that even seasoned law enforcement officers struggled to speak it aloud. Behind a closed door in a small Midwestern city, a twisted mind was hiding one of the most disturbing real crime stories ever uncovered.
“He Cooked Children: The Most Twisted Case Ever Recorded” plunges you into the dark world of a serial killer who blended into everyday life while committing shocking crimes that defied belief. Through police files, forensic evidence, interrogation tapes, and courtroom drama, this true crime audiobook reconstructs the investigation that exposed a predator hiding in plain sight.
This is not just a story about murder. It is a journey into criminal psychology, criminal profiling, and the terrifying reality of how warning signs were missed. You’ll hear how victims were overlooked, how dark secrets went undetected, and how a flawed system allowed a monster to operate unchecked. From FBI involvement to desperate searches and unanswered questions, this real-life thriller explores every layer of a disturbing case.
Told in a gripping, crime documentary style, this audiobook refuses to soften the truth. It confronts the brutal reality of justice delayed, the pain left behind, and the chilling mindset of a killer.
If you’re drawn to unsolved mysteries, cold cases, and the uncomfortable truths behind shocking crimes, this fearless investigation will stay with you long after it ends.
Start listening now—and uncover the story no one wanted to believe was real.

A hundred years. Thousands of women. One extraordinary pond.
I have learned about peacocks and terrapins, giant cobras and booming widgeons; I have heard about celebrity spottings and al-fresco lovemaking and digestive biscuits. These things make up the history of the Ladies’ Pond, but they also give us an insight into a hundred years of women’s lives.
From code breakers to cake bakers, I have learned that there is no such thing as a ‘normal woman’; and over the last hundred years the Pond has played host to thousands of remarkable people.
For a century, the Ladies’ Pond on Hampstead Heath has welcomed women from every walk of life: artists and activists, swimmers and sunbathers, friends and free spirits. As Britain’s most famous female open-air swimming spot, a pocket of wildness tucked away in the middle of the city, it has long attracted adventurous swimmers from all over the UK and the wider world.
Brave and Bold celebrates one hundred years of this beloved London landmark through the rhythm of a single swimming year, from frozen Januarys to sun-drenched midsummers; through friendships, feminist activism and the exhilaration of open water.
Created in collaboration with the Kenwood Ladies’ Pond Association and rich with previously unseen archive material and new interviews – from Dolly Alderton and Amy Liptrot to lifelong swimmers of every era – this is far more than the story of one pond. It’s a story of community, women and wild water across a century of social and political change, from suffragettes to soap stars, war to liberation, and shared flasks of tea to acts of quiet rebellion.
Brave and Bold is both a love letter to Hampstead Heath and to every woman who has ever felt most at home bobbing about in open water.
Brave and Bold is non-fiction with the warmth of autobiography, attentive to nature and to the ponds, habitats and ecosystems that make the Ladies’ Pond feel like a world apart. Through that lens, feminism becomes a daily practice—held in friendships, rituals, and the simple bravery of stepping into open water.
For fans of Dolly Alderton (Everything I Know About Love), Sara Pascoe (Animal), and Daisy Buchanan (How to Be a Grown-Up).
