Sinopsis

Jazz Origins explores the birth of jazz music, tracing its development from African American communities to its global impact. The book highlights how jazz, more than just a genre, represents a cultural shift fueled by improvisation, rhythm, and collective expression in the face of adversity.

Early jazz musicians innovated with improvisation, a technique where musicians spontaneously create melodies and rhythms, and swung away from European classical music's rigid structure.

The book meticulously examines jazz history, starting with the pre-jazz musical landscape and the blues' foundational role. It then delves into early jazz styles in New Orleans, spotlighting pivotal figures like Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, and Louis Armstrong.

The story continues through the Great Migration and the spread of jazz to northern cities, concluding with the early dissemination of jazz through recordings and radio, marking the start of its worldwide influence. This approach emphasizes the collective nature of early jazz development and challenges traditional narratives by highlighting the contributions of often-overlooked musicians.

Wildfire is a raw, true story about a single mom who stood up to one of the most documented predators in modern history. He fought like hell to keep this story buried. But I fought harder to tell it. This memoir isn’t just about what happened to me—it’s for anyone who’s been silenced, dismissed, or afraid to speak. It’s about trauma, truth, and what happens when a woman finally decides she’s done being afraid.

In this searing, frank and funny memoir, Catherine Simpson describes what it’s been like to live in her woman’s body, and to reach the realisation that all that time she’d spent trying to change her body to conform - often to unattainable standards - could be seen from a completely different perspective.
By the time she reached her fifties, Catherine Simpson and her body had gone through a lot together—from period pain and early menopause to shaming and harassment. But there had been success, joy, love, and laughter too: far more freedoms than her mother had, a fulfilling family life and career, and even the promise of further gains for her daughters.
So when a cancer diagnosis upends her life, Catherine is forced to reflect on her body, then and now. From growing up on a farm where veterinarians were more common than doctors, and where illness was “a nuisance,” she finds herself faced with the nuisance of a lifetime.
One Body is the demystifying, relatable, often hilarious and sometimes hair-raising story of how Catherine navigates her treatment and takes stock of the emotions and reflections it provokes. And how she comes to appreciate the skin she is in—to be grateful for her body and all that it does and is.

People, art and life. A record of a particular space in time. Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Sukhothai, Honolulu, Mexico City, northernmost Scotland, Andorra. Intimates and strangers. A mother and son seen for some seconds on a bridge in Shanghai. The emotions flowing between performer and conductor throughout a concert. The interpretation one creative artist gives to that of another's work. Gillian Bickley values the records we all make: — the heritage we may or may not preserve, what we choose to reveal of our lives, the constant interpretative understanding of the personal as well as the historical past, and the sacredness of memory. Here we find observation and reflection – on current affairs as well as people and places – and also the frisson produced by five "skulls" in a window, a funeral owl caught in hire-car headlights, and the realization that classical stories are re-enacted in our own lives.
" … a collection refined by the sensitivity and spirit of a poet who observes with the wonder and clarity of someone who is at once an insider and outsider. In her works, we see that Bickley's poetry has the ability to provide both spontaneous, on-the-spot immediacy and lingering, contemplative power…. Every city may have its gaps, ambiguities and unknowabilities, and the poet's intimate and candid reflections in this collection have successfully uncovered some of them." – Hilary Chan Tsz-Shan, Reviews, Asian Cha, February 2010 (Issue 10).
"You are lucky to have this poetry in your hand." — Karmel Schreyer.
"The poems in CHINA SUITE are unpretentious, direct, and even raw, like gemstones freshly dug out of a quarry. The psychological boundaries drawn to separate cultures from cultures, clans from clans, and individual from individual are utterly destroyed. An unnoticed observer, she trespasses ethnic taboos and social no-nos, and writes down whatever she sees without getting caught—in a graceful way." — Elbert S. P. Lee

During the 15th century, China had become economically and technologically advanced compared to civilizations in Europe at the time, and its fleet, which had reached a total of 3,500 ships, was unmatched by any other world power. Nevertheless, after conducting several trade expeditions with the massive fleet, the Chinese ships were either burned in the docks or left to rot. With that, China began to revert to the xenophobic policies of its past and reduce its presence in other lands. By 1525, the largest naval fleet in the world had essentially been destroyed or dismantled by China itself.
While China was in the process of isolating itself from the rest of the world, the European explorers were beginning to discover new lands, such as North America and South America. Among the countries doing the most exploring during this time were the Portuguese. The Portuguese had reached India in 1498, and by 1509 they had established part of their empire in India. This allowed the Portuguese to have a base of operations to further expand east into Asia. In 1511, the Portuguese captured the large spice trading center of Malacca in Malaysia, and like their base in India, Malacca allowed the Portuguese to have a foothold, thereby providing access to China and Southeast Asia.
The location of Macau was beneficial and strategically chosen by the Portuguese, as it was in close communication with Guangzhou and connected via a river system. In contrast to their earlier dealings with the Chinese, the Portuguese attempted to appear more humble and comply with the wishes of the Chinese rather than with force. As it turned out, the policy, in conjunction with increased European activities in the region, would help the Portuguese Empire hold on to Macau even as its fortunes dwindled everywhere else across the world.
