"You can't make this stuff up."
So says American writer, Imperial Russia enthusiast, Romanov junkie, and veteran expatriate, Jennifer Eremeeva, who has lived for the last twenty years in Russia after she fell in love with, and married HRH, her Handsome Russian Husband (occasionally a.k.a. Horrible Russian Husband). Luckily for Eremeeva, she didn't need to make up most of the events that inspired this, her first novel. When she (and her alter-ego heroine, coincidentally named Jennifer) quit her job to write full time, she became enthralled with the dingy gray building across the courtyard from her apartment, where, it turned out, Vladimir Lenin's embalmed corpse was routinely freshened up and preserved. The result is Lenin Lives Next Door: Marriage, Martinis, and Mayhem in Moscow.
Based on Eremeeva's two decades in Russia, Lenin Lives Next Door knits together vignettes of cross-cultural marriage and expatriate life with sharp observation, colorful historical background, and engaging humor. Each thematic chapter is an anecdotal exploration of an aspect of life in today's Russia, told with the help of a recurring cast of eccentric Russian and expat characters.
Lenin Lives Next Door introduces readers to Russians in their everyday milieu: at their dachas, in three-day traffic jams, and celebrating their 300-plus public and professional holidays with mayonnaise-based salads. For anyone who has ever long to visit Russia, this witty and engaging novel is the perfect tour guide. Short listed for a total of ten prestigious publishing awards Lenin Lives Next Door is a delightfully fresh inside look at Russia by a recovering Russophile.

A collection of “entertaining . . . unapologetically opinionated” essays from the New York Times–bestselling author of the Commissario Guido Brunetti novels (The New York Times).   Donna Leon has won legions of fans and waves of critical acclaim for her international bestselling mystery series featuring Venetian Commissario Guido Brunetti—not only for her intricate plots and gripping narratives, but for her insight into the culture, politics, family-life, and history of Venice. But outside of her mystery novels, Leon has also been writing essays on Venetian life and related topics for years.   In My Venice and Other Essays, the best of these essays are collected: more than fifty charming and insightful works ranging in topic from battles over garbage in the canals to the troubles with rehabbing Venetian real estate. Leon shares episodes from her life, explores her love of opera, and recounts tales from in and around her country house in the mountains. With pointed observations and humor, she also explores her family history, her former life in New Jersey, and the idea of the “Italian man.”   Sure to please longtime Leon fans as well as anyone who appreciates the wit and wisdom of a master wordsmith, this volume offers “an intriguing glimpse at the strong views of an exceptionally interesting and entertaining novelist” (The Seattle Times).

"Jesse....get over here!" I must have said that a gazillion times... as she trotted away. Why? Because I made a crucial mistake when I trained her. She became a character who provided many funny stories, so that even my friends with dogs would tell Jesse stories! Written in 2001, this is a story about best friends. I thought she was a dog. She thought I was her entertainment director. "The dog on the verge of words" is what one friend always said. We lived together for almost 14 years in a few states and we traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada. Jesse even rode on a ferry from Alaska to British Columbia. She watched the world go by with a smile for everyone she met. My family and our friends, both human and canine, looked forward to our visits and see what Jess would be up to this time!
The story about Jesse's life is intertwined with the story of how this book came to be. That story, written while I lived in a small village in Ireland, is full of fate and luck and was a romance novel in the making: but this was real life.
Most of the popular dogs whom we know were introduced to us by men and I for one am grateful for all the wonderful dogs I have met through their stories. Thanks guys!
Me 'n Jess exemplifies the fact that dogs can be "Woman's Best Friend" too. Enjoy the fun!
