Summary

Sebastiaen Vrancx was born in Antwerp, where his father was a merchant. Sebastian was an apprentice at the studio of Adam van Noort, who trained other prominent artists like Peter Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens.
After completing his learning, he became a master of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke and visited Italy for a while. In Antwerp, Vrancx was particularly valuable as an artist of battle scenes.
Here he was invited to join the elite of the Confrerie of Romanists, a society of humanists and artists from Antwerp. The high positions of his members provided him with an excellent opportunity to meet potential patrons. He was elected Dean of the City Guild of Artists and was a member and regional leader of the local civil militia.
Sebastian Vrancx is known today mainly for his battle scenes, a genre he was probably the pioneer of art in northern Europe. But his subject matter was much broader than just war scenes. Vrancx painted landscapes with mythological and religious scenes, allegories of seasons and months, urban views, banquet scenes, rural scenes, genre scenes, and even architectural pictures. He is as well famous for a series of drawings depicting scenes from the Vergilian Aeneids and designs for the prints and publishers of Antwerp.

What is Hygge? And how do you use it?
The answers to these questions are fairly simple, but they are complicated enough to write a short about it. That’s why this book will give you some answers as to making your home a cozier play, the Danish way, even if, or perhaps especially when the weather is cold and dark. In the last two chapters, we will briefly touch on what the Danish allow their kids to do when they have “free play” time, and how to create bath bombs yourself to have a comfortable hygge bath.

The Damon Runyon Theatre Hour. Damon Runyon is acknowledged as one of the great writers to come out of twentieth century America. Runyon's short stories are almost always told in the first person by a narrator who is never named, and whose role is unclear; he knows many gangsters and has no job that can be gleaned from his musings, nor does he admit to any criminal involvement; He’s a bystander, an observer, an average street-corner Joe. Runyon described himself as "being known to one and all as a guy who is just around". That line seems to say a lot about Runyon and his life. It was like you were with him on some street corner hustle or some shady dive and he was filling you in on all the angles, all the gossip, all of life. He was who so many people wanted to be with……or so many people wanted to be. Of course, the cliché about newspapermen and writers is that they are heavy drinkers, chain-smokers, gamblers and obsessively chase women with a sideline in the gathering of stories and facts and actually getting something written just before the deadline hits. That seems like Damon Runyon and his life summed up in one sentence. His stories became legendary ways of looking that bit differently at America, of soaking up the atmosphere of a glamorous and rip-roaring age and distilling it into a black and white type or, in our case, The Damon Runyon Theatre Hour.

Ukiyo-e (‘pictures of the floating world’) is a branch of Japanese art which originated during the period of prosperity in Edo (1615-1868). Characteristic of this period, the prints are the collective work of an artist, an engraver, and a printer. Created on account of their low cost thanks to the progression of the technique, they represent daily life, women, actors of kabuki theatre, or even sumo wrestlers. Landscape would also later establish itself as a favourite subject. Moronobu, the founder, Shunsho, Utamaro, Hokusai, and even Hiroshige are the most widely-celebrated artists of the movement. In 1868, Japan opened up to the West. The masterful technique, the delicacy of the works, and their graphic precision immediately seduced the West and influenced greats such as the Impressionists, Van Gogh, and Klimt. This is known as the period of ‘Japonisme’. Through a thematic analysis, Woldemar von Seidlitz and Dora Amsden implicitly underline the immense influence which this movement had on the entire artistic scene of the West. These magnificent prints represent the evolution of the feminine ideal, the place of the Gods, and the importance accorded to landscape, and are also an invaluable witness to a society now long gone.
