  	In the century since the Titanic sank, public interest in the ship and its history has waxed and waned on a regular basis. There was a flurry of activity right after it went down, as people tried to wrap their minds around what happened, but the World Wars pushed attention elsewhere. Then, during the 1950s, scientists had the time and money to become interested in it again. While there were numerous attempts to find that ship during the 1970s, the mighty ship still kept her secrets, her dead and their possessions safely at the bottom of the sea, where only strange creature comfortable in the depths could disturb them. 
  	As it turned out, the most famous wreck in the world would not be located until 1985, over 70 years after the ship sank that fateful April night. The discovery ignited a new flurry of interest in Titanic, including an interest in what the wreck still held, who those items belonged, to and what should be done with them. The 1997 blockbuster movie about the ship only stirred up more interest and controversy, both of which continue to this day.

When modern Assyriologists – the term for scholars who study ancient Mesopotamia – began compiling the myths of the region, they realized that many of the most popular myths had several versions and were often copied into multiple languages. Although myths are part of a culture’s religion, Mesopotamian people’s religious rituals were usually independent of any myth: rituals were a way for humans to connect and gain favor with their gods, while the myths explained the way things came to be, as well as elucidating moral elements of society.  
  	In ancient Mesopotamia, families formed the basis of local communities, and from that core, states, kingdoms, and empires often derived their identity and legitimacy. Of course, the family unit also played a crucial role in the development of religious beliefs and myths, and one of the most influential is the Anunnaki. Scores of religious texts from ancient Mesopotamia – written in Sumerian cuneiform and Akkadian cuneiform – relate how the Anunnaki were the second generation of gods and goddesses. However, scholars debate their abilities, roles, and even which deities were considered among the Anunnaki. Many texts describe the Anunnaki collectively as guardians of the Underworld, yet in other texts, they are mentioned as protectors of the heavens.

Some samurai embodied these ideals to the fullest, becoming paragons of virtue, while others used their martial skills for personal gain, engaging in deception, betrayal, and ruthless ambition. The reality of the samurai was one of contradiction—both noble protectors and fierce conquerors, loyal vassals and rebellious warlords.  
    
  As the samurai class grew in power, their stories became legendary, passed down through generations in both historical records and folklore. Figures like Miyamoto Musashi, the undefeated duelist, or the 47 Ronin, who avenged their fallen lord, continue to capture the imagination of people worldwide. Yet, separating historical fact from myth can be challenging. Many tales have been embellished over time, transformed into romanticized narratives that obscure the grittier truths of samurai life.
