Summary

Twenty-year-old Solana and her family cling to life in the highlands of Argentina as poisonous gas bubbles up from the ocean, creeping ever higher into the mountains and threatening the last remaining survivors of a dying world. When Solana wins a mysterious lottery that offers a safe haven for those strong enough to reach a secret location before the deadline, she must not only convince her family the lottery is real but also bring live animals and seeds on a harrowing trek across continents.
The mountains of Switzerland have protected Skylar and his father from the disasters around them. With their water and food supply dwindling, his father enters the lottery and almost wins. If one of the winners doesn’t show up to claim their spot, Skylar and his father have a shot—but Skylar’s father doesn’t plan on playing by the rules.
Peggy is a twelve-year-old Cherokee Indian girl and orphan in the mountains of Alaska. When her foster father wins the lottery, Peggy is excited for the adventure as they load up an RV and head south. These three families will face a wild and unforgettable journey across a hazardous landscape with mutant creatures, poisonous gas, acid rain and more as they race to reach their destination before the deadline.

“Jam-packed with weird aliens, mysterious artifacts, and lovable characters... a tremendous good time and an impressive debut.” -- Kirkus Reviews (starred)
A hilarious, offbeat debut space opera that skewers everything from pop culture to video games and features an irresistible foul-mouthed captain and her motley crew, strange life forms, exciting twists, and a galaxy full of fun and adventure.

Captain Eva Innocente and the crew of La Sirena Negra cruise the galaxy delivering small cargo for even smaller profits. When her sister Mari is kidnapped by The Fridge, a shadowy syndicate that holds people hostage in cryostasis, Eva must undergo a series of unpleasant, dangerous missions to pay the ransom.
But Eva may lose her mind before she can raise the money. The ship’s hold is full of psychic cats, an amorous fish-faced emperor wants her dead after she rejects his advances, and her sweet engineer is giving her a pesky case of feelings. The worse things get, the more she lies, raising suspicions and testing her loyalty to her found family.
To free her sister, Eva will risk everything: her crew, her ship, and the life she’s built on the ashes of her past misdeeds. But when the dominoes start to fall and she finds the real threat is greater than she imagined, she must decide whether to play it cool or burn it all down.

"Know, oh prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars—Nemedia, Ophir, Brythunia, Hyperborea, Zamora with its dark-haired women and towers of spider-haunted mystery, Zingara with its chivalry, Koth that bordered on the pastoral lands of Shem, Stygia with its shadow-guarded tombs, Hyrkania whose riders wore steel and silk and gold. But the proudest kingdom of the world was Aquilonia, reigning supreme in the dreaming west. Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen- eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet."

Unstoppable and lethal, they move across the battlefields like ghosts. They are the soldiers of the Legio Occulta.

    Nola, Roman Italy, 19 August 14 A.D.

History does not acknowledge them, but the Roman Empire knows the debt they owe to this secret legion. Trained not to fight but to read and interpret the messages of the gods, they pave the way for Roman swords, intervening when earthly weapons must give way to the power of the transcendent. With the Legio Occulta, no battle is impossible.

Clad in snow-white armour and tunics as black as night, they are seers, fortune-tellers, necromancers and haruspies selected when they were children from arenas, slave markets and burning villages. Led by a general who speaks only in sign language, their motto is Vigiles in tenebris: watchers of the night.

Iron blades clash with magic. Rome will never be the same.

    Praise for Roberto Genovesi:

'Roberto Genovesi is the Italian master of historical fantasy' ANDREA FREDIANI.

'A very original, wide-ranging novel full of characters, full of descriptions and narrative inventions' IL GIORNALE.
