SHORTLISTED IN THE SUNDAY TIMES SPORTS BOOK AWARDS 2023 FOR NEW FEMALE SPORTS WRITING

'Jen has captured the human (and humorous) side of following a football team. A compelling story hilariously told' Sara Pascoe
'From family to football, Jen Offord has captured something we can all relate to. Funny and heartbreaking in equal measure. A must read.' Cariad Lloyd

'Hilarious and moving in equal parts' Carrie Dunn
Jen Offord watches it all go wrong for Charlton Athletic and the world.

When her beloved Charlton Athletic clinched promotion to The Championship in May 2019, sportswriter Jen Offord splashed out on season tickets for herself and her sceptical brother Michael, setting out to chronicle the south-east London outfit's first season back in the second tier of English football.

But this season, more than any other before it, would be a game of two halves. A billionaire takeover backfired spectacularly; the team plummeted into the relegation zone just as Coronavirus swept in to suspend life as we know it.

The Year of The Robin is a love letter to the power of football even when there is no football to actually watch, filled with wild characters searching for redemption and wrestling over issues of money, racism and mental health. A funny, sharp and a thought-provoking exploration of the idea of family in unprecedented times and season from which the world may never fully recover.

In "The Green Arch," mountaineer and author John Long offers vivid descriptions of ascending the west face of Tahquitz Rock--a granite, 8,846-foot-tall rock formation located on the high western slope of the San Jacinto mountain range in Southern California--as a teenager with his childhood climbing friends.

John Long (born July 21, 1953) is an American rock climber and author. A skilled free climber, Long popularized "free soloing" (climbing with no rope) during his high school days out at Joshua Tree National Park, first introducing John Bachar to the practice in 1974 with their now fêted ascent of Double Cross, at Joshua Tree. Long's many climbing feats include the first one-day ascent of the most sought after rock climb in North America, the 3,000 foot Nose route on El Capitan, on Memorial Day, 1975, with Jim Bridwell and Billy Westbay. The following year, partnered with Dale Bard, Long made the second one-day ascent of El Cap via the West Face, in the remarkable time of five hours. He followed this with blitz ascents of Leaning Tower, Washington Column, Half Dome and Ribbon Falls, precipitating the modern speed climbing movement so popular today, both in Yosemite Valley and beyond.

Gary Telles has been narrating audiobooks for the past ten years. A veteran stage actor, he has performed classical, contemporary and original theatre across the country, in addition to appearing on television, radio and CD-ROM.

Through the seventies and into the mid-eighties a cohort of young climbers challenged the siege mentality of their seniors on high mountains in the Greater Ranges with fast moving, lightweight expeditions run on a shoestring. Brian Hall was one of them and, in High Risk, he describes their daring adventures and the counterculture they lived within, their rivalries and relationships, and the terrible price many of them paid. When all was done, they had raised the standards of mountaineering by changing its style and ethics.

To take Arne Haase as a role model: Germany's oldest marathon runner is still doing 20 kilometers twice a week at the age of 90. And it doesn't have to be that sporty. But wouldn't the Haase model be a nice vision of you in your old days, being "trapped" in the body of a 45-year-old?For millions of people, regular exercise is part of their lives. But almost all of us run the wrong way. To stay mobile from now until old age, we can make up our minds for a fundamental change. E.g. we mostly, unconsciously run as if we were training for a competition. From the age of 40, our strength and joints start to deteriorate. So what can we change in order to enjoy it forever? Change our running attitude, running mindfully, reduce our biological age: Food for thought from philosophy, psychology and coaching leads to a lifestyle that keeps you strong and healthy forever. One reading session and you're off and running!"Living in the long Run" is neither a motivational guide nor a training companion: just read it, put it down and start a new life! The inspiring narrative running coach invites you to take things radically slowly, but to take the first small step towards almost infinity. Because endurance matters.Running properly starts in your mind!In order to still be strong at the age of 90, author Dr. Patrick Krause tears down the performance patterns from our sporting past as well as our modern society; running (or any other fitness sport) should ultimately glide into the flow beyond all logic of increase - our bones will be grateful! How does that kind of "stress-reduced running" work? More like a meditation to go with the flow - and that's also how the book is written. Because running properly starts in your mind! This means eliminating opponents such as some fellow runners and potential tempo tyrans like watches and apps, which focus on competition and the logic of improvement. It's about consciously taking every mental and athletic step.
