Beschreibung

‘Marek’ is a fascinating, fast-moving novel describing sensitively a young man’s experience of war and peace in a gripping account set against the tragic events of World War I in Russia. That country was ruled by the Tsar. Russian rulers, then and until today have ruled as autocrats, causing enormous misery and loss of life. On the outbreak of WWI many Czechs and Slovaks living in Russia, although citizens of the Habsburg Empire had little loyalty to the Emperor. In fact, many were openly hostile and formed a semi-autonomous Legion within the Russian Army. After the Russian revolution they tried unsuccessfully to remain neutral in the civil war in which the Red Army defeated the aristocrats. They wished to return home but the only way was to cross Siberia by train and by ship to Europe. Their now largely forgotten story is told through the eyes of Marek, a young recruit.

With a mysterious safe, rumors of political corruption, and gunshots ringing out in the dark, the snowbound retreat transforms into a high-stakes puzzle where no one is who they claim to be.

A woman lies unconscious on the carpet of a smart Westminster apartment, one red high-heeled shoe has fallen off... A younger woman lies with her eyes closed, half-hidden under a drinks cabinet... Her fingers clutch an empty bottle... What happens when a mother withholds her love? When she has no love to withhold? When she sees her three daughters as obstacles to her own formidable career? This is the story of three sisters, Millie, Di and Cleo. They are the war babies. Growing up in a world still in turmoil, hungover from war, the sisters struggle to leave behind their mother and build their own lives. Each sister is lost in her own world where extreme need leads to extreme behaviour. Then a tragic event forces Cleo, the youngest and wildest, to become the catalyst to smash the pattern. Who will adapt and survive in this new world? Who will find peace? From London to New York and to Vietnam, the focus shifts from one sister to the next, putting human nature, its flaws and its virtues, under the spotlight. With elements of a psychological thriller, Rachel Billington observes her characters with clinical detachment, but also with wit and understanding. Yet there is hope at the heart of this story which will leave the reader wondering long after the final twist is revealed.

"Wuthering Heights" by Emily Brontë is a novel written in the early 19th century. The story focuses on the intense and turbulent relationships among the residents of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, particularly highlighting the enigmatic figure of Heathcliff and his connection to Catherine Earnshaw. It explores themes of love, revenge, and the haunting consequences of past actions, all set against the backdrop of the desolate Yorkshire moors.
At the beginning of "Wuthering Heights," we meet Mr. Lockwood, who has recently rented a property at Thrushcross Grange. He decides to visit his reclusive landlord, Mr. Heathcliff, at Wuthering Heights. Lockwood's encounter with Heathcliff is filled with unease, revealing a hostile atmosphere marked by mistrust and discontent. The narrative then hints at Heathcliff’s complicated past as an orphan taken in by the Earnshaw family, setting the stage for an exploration of social hierarchies and emotional scars, which form the crux of the novel.
As Lockwood navigates his growing curiosity about these charged family dynamics, he inadvertently becomes entangled in the brooding past that shapes the present lives of the characters, particularly Heathcliff and Catherine.
