Sinopsis

In "Black Spirits and White: A Book of Ghost Stories," Ralph Adams Cram crafts a mesmerizing tapestry of the supernatural, intertwining Gothic elements with his distinct literary flair. The collection presents a series of chilling tales that explore the complex interplay between good and evil, often influenced by Cram's own philosophical musings on life beyond death. Cram's rich, evocative prose invites readers into atmospheric settings, where the ethereal and corporeal realms converge, and the boundaries of reality are artfully blurred. Each story resonates with psychological depth, reflecting early 20th-century anxieties about modernity, spirituality, and the unknown. Ralph Adams Cram, a prominent architect and literary figure, found inspiration in the architectural beauty of antiquity and its interwoven narratives with folklore and myth. His experiences and interests led him to delve into topics such as spiritualism, the occult, and the supernatural, thereby enriching his ghostly narratives with authentic authority. With his architectural background, Cram's ability to create haunting spaces and resonant atmospheres within the text is particularly notable, offering readers a visceral experience akin to wandering through a haunted edifice. I highly recommend "Black Spirits and White" to enthusiasts of ghost stories and those intrigued by the blending of literary and architectural art. Cram's explorations of the spectral yield profound insights into the human psyche, making this collection an essential read for anyone eager to confront the mysteries that lie beyond the veil.

In The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde weaves a gothic tale of vanity, moral corruption, and the pursuit of eternal youth. Dorian Gray, a young man of extraordinary beauty, makes a dark pact that allows him to remain forever young while a hidden portrait ages and bears the weight of his sins. As Dorian’s outward appearance remains perfect, the portrait becomes a grotesque reflection of his inner decay.
Narrated by Christian Neale, this classic exploration of the dangers of vanity and hedonism comes alive in a story that captivates with its wit, elegance, and haunting moral undertones.

Enjoy this short story by Mace Styx.
She blinked at Sir Farridan’s sudden entrance. He was surprised by how ordinary-looking she was, for a princess – they were supposed to be wispy little things, delicate and ungodly beautiful. Princess Idrun wore a simple white gown, her unruly blonde hair falling down to her hips, a greenish cast to it in the light. Her eyes were green as well, gazing at Sir Farridan now with some wariness to her expression.
“Who are you?” she asked him.
“Princess Idrun,” Sir Farridan said, executing a short, somewhat perfunctory bow. “I am Sir Farridan. I have travelled long and far to rescue you.”
To his surprise, she merely looked slightly confused by this. It wasn’t the swooning gratitude he had been expecting.
“Rescue me?” she repeated, frowning. “Rescue me from what?”
He was so baffled by her question that for a moment he just stood there gawking at her, jaw hanging open. She stared back with a face as smooth and unaffected as glass. He reasoned that perhaps she was in shock from seeing another human being after so long in isolation.
“You – from this!” Sir Farridan said, gesturing vaguely around the room. He tugged at his collar, wishing he’d worn lighter armor. “This place!”
“I like it here.” Princess Idrun replied, making no move to get up off the bed. In fact, she seemed to be slightly bored by the conversation, her body language closed-off and unfriendly.
“But…why would you want to stay here?!” he blurted out. “In an empty, crumbling castle?”
“Nobody bothers me here,” Idrun replied, with a shrug. “It’s peaceful.”

Mysterious socialite Dorian Gray is at the centre of Sherlock Holmes’ latest investigation in this astonishing, uncanny mash-up of Victorian mystery and horror

    1903

Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson have tickets to the newly arrived Egyptian Circus. Holmes is puzzled by his brother Mycroft’s cryptic gift but is intrigued enough to attend the next production.

The performers, dressed as wondrous half-animal, half-human gods from Egyptian mythology, display superhuman agility and stunts. But they speak no Arabic, sequester themselves in the stables after each show and take orders from a mysterious ring master who is yet to be seen. And then one of the performers is murdered.

Holmes’s enquires lead him to Montebank Manor, the home of the beautiful and secretive socialite Dorian Gray. As Holmes digs deeper, he learns Gray is hiding much more than his involvement in a murder. It’s a darkly fantastical tale of lies, experimentation, hypnosis and wicked ambition.
