Sinopse

Letters to a Young Poet, by Rainer Maria Rilke, is a timeless literary gem that invites readers into the intimate realm of creativity, art, and personal discovery. Composed between 1902 and 1908, these ten letters were addressed to Franz Xaver Kappus, an aspiring poet seeking guidance from the revered Rilke. The resulting correspondences deliver profound insights that transcend time and apply to all who seek deeper self-awareness, emotional resilience, and a sincere understanding of the artistic journey.
Rilke's gentle and introspective voice resonates on every page, urging the young poet—and indeed, every reader—to treasure solitude as a crucible for inner growth. He advocates for patience and unwavering dedication to the craft, emphasizing that true creativity stems from a willingness to explore one's innermost feelings. By sharing his contemplations on love, loneliness, and the purpose of art, Rilke illuminates the transformative power of introspection in developing an authentic sense of self. His reflections unify the personal with the universal, showing how poetry, and all forms of art, can elevate and heal the human spirit.
In addition to its literary merit, Letters to a Young Poet stands as a testament to the enduring impact of correspondence in an age far removed from instant communication. Rilke's words carry the warmth of genuine mentorship, reminding us that passion and vulnerability lie at the heart of the creative process. The book's influence extends beyond aspiring writers, guiding anyone longing to articulate their innermost truths. Even over a century later, Rilke's meditative counsel on courage, belief, and the power of intuitive expression holds profound relevance. Whether read for aesthetic pleasure or spiritual clarity, Letters to a Young Poet remains one of the most stirring explorations of artistic devotion, penned by a poet whose legacy continues to guide and inspire. This correspondence endures as a timeless classic. This translation has been assisted by artificial intelligence.

The 3:15 train left Polk County on September 2, 1930, carrying a most extraordinary passenger. Eugene H “Gene” Brock, a genius of the type about whom astounding stories are told, was leaving East Texas – one of the country’s most backward impoverished areas.
His destination – Texas Technological College.
What Gene didn’t know was one day he would achieve a unique status, one attained by only a most select few – as an internationally acknowledge expert in two of science’s newest fields: nuclear energy relating to fission and the bomb that ended World War II, and high-powered computer systems – the likes of which put a man on the Moon.
Gene’s story is brought to life by his son, Ronald, and has humble beginnings in Texas’ “Big Thicket.” It follows the young Gene, born a fifth-generation progeny of East Texas subsistence farmers, and the hardships he endured through the Great Depression which kept him homeless for much of the time he was earning his degree in mathematics and physics.
A burning desire to master new challenges led Gene to Los Alamos and a pivotal role in redesigning the Manhattan Project’s atomic bomb. But one scientific challenge wasn’t enough. Gene became an acknowledged expert when computers evolved into another scientific discovery of significant importance.
Once again sought after by the federal government, Gene received a congressional appointment to serve as Director of Computation and Analysis in NASA’s manned spaceflight project – the project that enabled Neil Armstrong’s walk on the Moon.
As a fitting epilogue to his father’s extraordinary story, the author tells of his own key role in another scientific adaptation when the technology of the World Wide Web was introduced and became known across the globe as the Internet. And the term “startup company” became the scientific phenomenon of the 1990s.

A River Runs Through It and Other Stories turned Norman Maclean into a late-in-life literary phenomenon and then a household name after the success of the Hollywood film based on the title story. Yet fewer know of Maclean's lifelong struggles to reconcile very different parts of himself: the revered teacher and writer in the intellectual hub of Chicago and the Montana man compelled by the wildness and traumas of his home state and family, including the tragic Mann Gulch fire and the murder of his brother.

Rebecca McCarthy's intimate portrait of Maclean draws on her long friendship with the author from the time she became a student at the University of Chicago through the rest of his life. Irrepressible as a teacher, Maclean shared guidance, advice, campus and city rambles, and loyal friendship with generations of students. Behind the scenes, he honed an art as meditative and patient as his approach to fly fishing. McCarthy's experiences intertwine with stories from friends, family, colleagues, and others to detail an incredibly rich life that seemed destined to remain divided—until the creation of his classic American story.

A vivid evocation of an iconic figure, Norman Maclean reveals the forces and events that shaped the author-educator and formed the bedrock of his beloved stories.

Anatomy of a Whale - Poems

Like all the best poets, Matt Barnard knows how to make poems bigger than themselves; short lyrics like ‘Please Follow the Yellow Line,’ ‘The Day Twilight Went on for Days’ and ‘Border Patrol’ manage to fill the page and the time beyond their reading, treading a nice line in Larkinesque terror. Writers like Charles Boyle and Charles Simic also come to mind in the poet’s highly original metaphors, his ability to draw symbol from the everyday. There are lyrics here on everything from cows named after Jane Fonda and Bette Davis to villanelles about intellectual property and the knotty question of dying hair in middle age. This is a poet with the highest regard for the reader, who offers us poems that lay out a welcome mat, before ushering us into the conservatory to look out at that incredible, incredible view.
