Sinopsis

Spinning Spiders unveils the fascinating world of spiders and their extraordinary silk, examining its science, construction, and diverse applications. Spiders, masters of evolutionary adaptation, use silk not only for webs but also for shelter and even aerial dispersal through ballooning, a method of floating on air currents. This book explores how spiders have mastered silk production, influencing their survival and potentially benefiting human technology.

The book progresses from spider biology and silk science to the intricacies of web construction, detailing various web types and their engineering principles. It highlights how silk's strength and elasticity make it valuable for biomimicry, with potential uses in materials science, medicine, and engineering. Consider that spider silk is stronger than steel and more elastic than nylon, making its potential impact groundbreaking.

Through microscopy studies, behavioral experiments, and biomechanical analyses, Spinning Spiders integrates behavioral ecology with materials science, providing a holistic view of spider silk. The book emphasizes ecological interactions, evolutionary adaptations, and the interdisciplinary connections between biology and engineering. It highlights the potential for developing novel materials inspired by spider silk and its unique properties.

Whether you have already played craps or want to play craps for the first time, it’s hard to learn how to play when you’re on a live game. Craps is fast-paced, which leaves little time for casino staff or even your buddies to tell you what is going on.
The author of Get Dicey wrote this book for all players. As a craps dealer in Las Vegas, Nevada, the author introduced countless people to the game, but a busy casino is no place to try and explain how to play craps. Now, in Get Dicey, everything about craps is revealed. It’s all true.
Going to a casino is about having fun. Of course winning is the most fun, but you also want to fit into the exciting atmosphere. The game of craps is steeped in tradition and there are points of etiquette to observe as a matter of politeness to other players. Also, because craps is such a hands-on game for the players, there are rules the casino will enforce. It’s best to know them.
In fact, the craps scene is so interesting, the chapter from Get Dicey about game etiquette and protocol was featured in Midwest Gaming & Travel magazine.
This 2 hour and 40 minute audiobook goes through every bet on the table chapter by chapter. Get Dicey then provides detailed instructions for advanced forms of craps play known as power pressing. An entire chapter is dedicated to the mathematics of probability to explain the house advantages on every bet so that you can understand which bets have the least house advantage and which ones are nearly guaranteed to take your money.

John Leland's 'Itinerary' was the product of several journeys around England and Wales undertaken between 1538 and 1543. The manuscript is made up of Leland's notebooks, which were first published in the 18th century, and later in a ten-part, five-volume edition published by Lucy Toulmin (1906-10). Part IX of the manuscript begins in the south of England and gradually meanders its way, county by county, through central and northern England up to the borders of Scotland. Leland did not prepare the manuscript for publication and it is sometimes difficult to follow, with occasional geographically-misplaced sections, lists of headings with content yet to be added, and the odd lapse into Latin. Part IX of the Itinerary will be of interest, nevertheless, to anyone with an interest in English history as an early form of the 'gazetteer', compiled at a time when the shape of the country as a whole was still a mystery to most of its inhabitants. Leland's spellings tend to be inconsistent and for the most part I have used modern pronunciations unless a consistent spelling clearly indicates a different pronunciation. I have also omitted or modified a few short passages that would be otherwise incomprehensible. (Summary by Phil Benson)
