Sinopsis

Forest Navigation Skills offers a comprehensive guide to mastering wayfinding in forest environments by blending traditional woodcraft with modern understanding. It emphasizes developing self-reliance through techniques like map reading, compass use, and interpreting natural indicators, rather than solely depending on technology.

The book uniquely promotes a deeper connection with nature, arguing that skillful navigation enhances both safety and the overall wilderness experience. The book teaches how to use the sun and stars for orientation, understand tree growth patterns, and recognize terrain features, linking these skills to ecological knowledge and historical practices.

It progresses from fundamental map and compass skills to advanced techniques such as constructing improvised tools and predicting weather based on environmental cues. Ethical wilderness travel is also addressed.

Ultimately, Forest Navigation Skills aims to empower outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers to confidently explore forests, fostering a profound appreciation for the natural world and promoting responsible stewardship of forest ecosystems. It integrates practical exercises and real-world scenarios to reinforce learning, making it a valuable resource for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of forest navigation.

Don't just see the sights—get to know the people.
Set in Africa, but not wholly African; an isolated nation, yet receptive to the outside world; hierarchical and conservative, yet innovative and desirous of modernity; conformist as a people, and fiercely independent as individuals? The Ethiopian identity defies definition. Ethiopia exists simultaneously in different time periods. Its people, when they see something new that might work to their advantage, will embrace it and find ways to improve on it. Modern democracy, however, has understandably been slower to bloom given the strong historical antecedents of its monarchy.
Culture Smart! Ethiopia unpacks the values, attitudes, and traditions of this culturally rich nation. Etiquette in daily life, socializing, and communicating are all helpfully described, and advice is given on how to make the most of a visit. Above all, it provides the tools to do so in a considerate and sensitive manner.
Have a richer and more meaningful experience abroad through a better understanding of the local culture. Chapters on history, values, attitudes, and traditions will help you to better understand your hosts, while tips on etiquette and communicating will help you to navigate unfamiliar situations and avoid faux pas.

Conversations With a Deaf Cat is the story of how Yolande and Michael taught English on a Canadian Indian reservation and cared for Yolande's mother for five months in the Netherlands until her death from ALS. It also tells about Michael's experiences as a native English speaker in a home with people who tried not to speak English whenever possible.Michael and Yolande are English teachers and writers who travel the globe teaching non-English speaking students how to sound and write like native English speakers. Before teaching, Michael was a corporate manager and actor for thirty-odd years, while Yolande did almost everything (teaching, costuming, animal sheltering, etc.) Together, they have traveled all over the world and plan on continuing to do so until retirement (or partial retirement), whichever comes first. Michael also intends to keep writing, so be on the lookout for more stories about his adventures.

Washington Hotel—Bretton Woods, New Hampshire New England is also full of monsters and devils that lurk in the woods, lakes, and seas. Explored are some of the best known and most obscure, including Lake Champlain’s Champ; the Cumberland Vampire of Rhode Island; Gloucester’s Sea Serpent; the Black Dog of West Peak in Meriden, Connecticut; and the Flying Moose of Maine.   Also covered are unusual events, such as UFO sightings (Connecticut’s UFO crash at Bantam Lake / Betty and Barney Hill’s UFO experience), and roadside oddities, such as the World’s Tallest Filing Cabinet (Burlington, VT), Boston’s Big Steaming Tea Kettle, and the literal Fork in the Road of Westport, MA. Lots of people take a walk to clear their heads, but have you ever walked over six hundred miles to do it?On a misty, gray morning in the summer of 2018, Gordon Bernhardt set out from a small town in the French Pyrenees to walk the ancient pilgrim route of Camino de Santiago, seeking clarity for his business, his relationships, and his priorities in life. The lessons he learned as a peregrino—a pilgrim—ranged from insights on financial advising and investing to the importance of noticing the tiniest details of each day: like the ant trails winding across the path at his feet or the “smiling sunflower” that lightened his steps in the middle of a hot summer day.An investing book like no other, Buen Camino: What a Hike through Spain Taught Me about Investing and Life will remind you that although we’re all walking a different path, we’re all headed for a common destination.

A Lady's Visit to the Gold...

    ***The 1853 Controversial Bestseller***
In 1852 a genteel young English woman of modest means cannily realised that not everyone who made money from the Australian gold-fields struck it rich by actually digging. Pregnant and not yet married, she accompanied her brother to Victoria and spent two months writing a non-fiction manuscript of her time there. After returning to England, she sold the book to a London publisher and her writerly ambitions came to fruition.
She wrote anonymously. But since the 1980s, researchers have become increasingly sure the author was Ellen Clacy, maiden name Sturmer.
While some researchers have accused Clacy of plagiarism and fabrication, others have pointed out the limitations of historical documentation.
The gold-rush era is so foreign to us today, that even the bald facts sometimes read like sensationalised fiction. In other ways, the 21st century is not so different from the 19th.
This audiobook has been edited for listening ease. A new introduction by Amberley Ember underscores the major crime of this story: the invisibilization of First Nations people, with the theft and the destruction of their land.
