Sinopsis

Arctic Cold Strategies explores the remarkable adaptations that allow animals to thrive in the extreme Arctic environment. This book delves into how Arctic animals combat freezing temperatures and scarce resources, highlighting the importance of understanding these survival mechanisms amidst climate change and habitat loss. Discover how specialized fur structures, fat metabolism, and unique circulatory systems provide a physiological defense against the cold.

The book investigates both physiological and behavioral strategies, such as migration, denning, and social structures, vital for energy conservation and predator avoidance. It also examines the intricate ecological relationships within Arctic ecosystems, including food web dynamics and habitat changes.

The book progresses from introducing fundamental principles of cold adaptation to detailed case studies of polar bears, Arctic foxes, seals, and migratory birds, culminating in a synthesis of findings and a discussion of climate change implications. By blending scientific accuracy with engaging storytelling, Arctic Cold Strategies draws connections between biology, ecology, and climate science, offering insights valuable to students, researchers, conservationists, and anyone interested in the future of Arctic wildlife.

The Tokugawa Shogunate, also known as the Edo period (1603–1868), was a time of unprecedented peace and stability in Japan, following centuries of war and political fragmentation. This era began with the victory of Tokugawa Ieyasu at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, a decisive conflict that allowed him to consolidate power over the warring daimyo. Three years later, in 1603, he was granted the title of shogun by the emperor, officially marking the beginning of Tokugawa rule.
Ieyasu’s triumph at Sekigahara was not merely a military success but also a demonstration of his strategic brilliance and political foresight. By carefully forging alliances and exploiting rivalries among the daimyo, he ensured that his Tokugawa clan would emerge as the dominant force in Japan. Once in power, Ieyasu took immediate steps to secure his family’s hold over the nation. He redistributed land among the daimyo, rewarding loyal vassals and weakening potential threats. This reorganization of landholdings laid the foundation for the centralized feudal system that would define the Tokugawa era.
Although Ieyasu formally retired in 1605, passing the title of shogun to his son Tokugawa Hidetada, he continued to wield significant influence from behind the scenes. His retirement was a strategic move designed to solidify the legitimacy of hereditary succession, ensuring that the Tokugawa family would maintain control for generations. This transition of power set a precedent for stability, preventing the kind of succession disputes that had plagued previous shogunates.

A galvanizing road trip across California's immense public wilderness from a beloved adventurer.

It all began with a camping trip. Outdoor enthusiast Josh Jackson had never heard of "BLM land" before a casual recommendation from a friend led him to a free campsite in the desert—and the revelation that over fifteen million acres of land in California are owned collectively by the people. In The Enduring Wild, he takes us on a road trip spanning thousands of miles, crisscrossing the Golden State to seek out every parcel of public wilderness therein belonging to the federal Bureau of Land Management, from the Pacific shores of the King Range down to the Mojave Desert. Over mountains, across prairies, and through sagebrush, Jackson unravels the stories of these lands. He tells of the Indigenous peoples who have called them home for millennia, of the extractivist threats that imperil them today, and of the grassroots organizers and political champions who have rallied to their common defense to uphold the radical mandate to protect these natural treasures for generations to come. For the adventurers, campers, explorers, map readers, road trippers, nature enthusiasts, and public lands lovers out there, The Enduring Wild is an indispensable invitation to know these places more deeply and to embrace our common inheritance.
