Sinopsis

Ritual Dance Origins explores the vital role of dance within indigenous cultures, revealing how movement embodies history, spirituality, and social structure. More than mere entertainment, these dances serve as a powerful means of cultural transmission, preserving historical narratives and genealogies across generations. The book highlights how dance connects individuals to the spirit world and ancestors, reinforcing community bonds and defining social roles.

The book progresses by examining dance as historical record, spiritual practice, and social framework, using case studies and diverse sources to illustrate these themes. Colonization and cultural suppression have significantly impacted these traditions, yet resilience and revitalization efforts persist. Ritual Dance Origins emphasizes indigenous perspectives, challenging Western interpretations and presenting dance as a complex and meaningful form of cultural expression.

The book begins with core concepts and unfolds across three sections, culminating in insights into the enduring significance of ritual dance in contemporary indigenous societies. This study bridges history, performing arts, anthropology, religious studies, and ethnomusicology, offering a nuanced and holistic understanding. By prioritizing indigenous voices, the book provides a valuable resource for fostering intercultural understanding and promoting cultural awareness, making it an invaluable read for anyone interested in the performing arts and history.

Great Sierra Waters, the Eastern Slope is a definitive study of the Truckee River but also includes the Owens and the East Walker. It's a serious fly-fishing book that shows you how to fish these rivers, what to use as far as fly patterns, and how to tie them for your greatest success. In addition to the fishing information which represents 60 years of fishing knowledge by the author, it details the plight of the Lahontan Cutthroat that has existed in the Truckee River drainage for 10 million years. This drainage runs from Lake Tahoe to Pyramid Lake and the Cutthroats have been famous since the 1930's when fishermen flocked from all over the world to fish for them.
In the last twenty years the original strain was found in a few tributaries in the Pilot Peak range of north central Nevada. They have taken hold again in Pyramid Lake and fish in excess of 30 pounds are currently available and they're running up the Truckee to spawn. The demise of the Truckee began with the building of Derby Dam in the early 1900s. The last great spawning run occurred in 1938, and the average fish weighed 18 1/2 pounds. The last great Cutthroat trout was caught in 1949 in downtown Reno, Nevada and weighed twenty-two pounds and ten ounces.
As a boy, author Terry Courtright fished it constantly from the time he was 10 years old until he left for college. He later came back and wrote outdoor columns about fly fishing the Truckee, then moved back to Montana to fish all of the great waters in the West. As we speak, there is a great resurgence of interest in recovering this fish in this fishery and Courtright's last chapter on this book called The Restoration of the Lahontan Cutthroat brings to light the most sophisticated and workable fisheries plan that has ever been developed. Great Sierra Waters is a welcome and timely addition to knowledge of the trout fisheries everywhere.

This collection includes two of Emerson’s essays: History and Intellect. Emerson wrote most of his essays to be presented as lectures first, and later revised them for print. The essay History explores the nature and importance of historical understanding. Emerson holds that history is not simply a jumble of events and facts, but rather a living and dynamic force that can inspire and guide human action. In his essay Intellect, Emerson notes that the intellectual power of humans separates them from all other living beings on earth. He describes how, when one for only a few moments withdraws oneself from the world and all of its stimulating rush, we place ourselves in a position where truths can be revealed.

The Poverty of the World -...

In The Poverty of the World, Sheyda Jahanbani brings together the histories of United States foreign relations and domestic politics to explain why, during a period of unprecedented affluence, Americans rediscovered poverty and supported major policy initiative to combat it. Revisiting a moment of triumph for American liberals in the 1940s, Jahanbani shows how the United States's newfound role as a global superpower prompted novel ideas among liberal thinkers about how to address poverty and generated new urgency for trying to do so. Their sense of responsibility about deploying American knowledge and wealth as a beneficent force in the world, produced such foreign aid programs as the Peace Corps.

Drawing on a wide variety of archival material, Jahanbani reinterprets the lives and work of prominent liberal figures in postwar American social politics to show the global origins of their ideas. By tracing how American liberals invented the problem of "global poverty" and executed a war against it, The Poverty of the World sheds new light on the domestic impacts of the Cold War, the global ambitions of American liberalism, and the way in which key intellectuals and policymakers worked to develop an alternative vision of United States empire in the decades after World War II.
