Summary

When Maddie accepts a part-time art teaching job in a quiet coastal town, she’s determined to leave her past behind. But on her first day, a lively little girl named Ivy captures her attention and something about her laugh, her bright eyes, the way she sketches feels unsettlingly familiar.

Noah, a widowed architect, is Ivy’s adoptive father. For seven years, he’s built a life around her pancake breakfasts, bedtime stories, and the steady love she deserves. What he doesn’t expect is the new art teacher, whose presence stirs emotions he thought had been buried with his grief.

As Maddie begins to realize the truth that Ivy is the daughter she gave up years ago Noah discovers a letter never meant for him. Suddenly, the past they’ve both avoided collides with the fragile connection forming between them.

Can they find healing in the child who ties their lives together, or will the truth pull them apart?

Dostoevsky's novella " Notes from the Underground" is part embittered monologue and part brief descriptions of anecdotes from the anonymous writer's life. As the author himself states:
"The author of the diary and the diary itself are, of course, imaginary. Nevertheless it is clear that such persons as the writer of these notes not only may, but positively must, exist in our society, when we consider the circumstances in the midst of which our society is formed."
The Russia of the mid 19th century was a period in which the society was awash with a myriad of philosophical ideas as it became increasingly influenced by the West. The writer instinctively reacts against Utopian ideals and sees in himself the proof that such a philosophy is doomed.
Head Stories Audio presents "Notes from the Underground" by Fyodor Dostoevsky, narrated by Simon Hester. With original music.
