Sinopse

In "Fighting the Whales," R. M. Ballantyne crafts a gripping narrative that explores the perilous world of whaling in the 19th century. Combining adventure with vivid descriptions, Ballantyne delves into the harsh realities faced by whalers, drawing on his own experiences at sea. The book's literary style is marked by a blend of realism and romanticism, reflecting the era's fascination with exploration and the sublime forces of nature. With its rich detail and dramatic encounters, the novel serves as both a thrilling adventure and a critical commentary on humanity's relationship with nature. R. M. Ballantyne was an English author known for his compelling tales aimed at young readers, often inspired by his journeys and the maritime life. His background in the fur trading and whaling industries profoundly influenced his perspective on the moral complexities and dangers of such vocations. This life experience, combined with his storytelling prowess, allows Ballantyne to bring authenticity and depth to the thrilling yet morally ambiguous world he depicts in "Fighting the Whales." Recommended for both avid readers of historical adventure fiction and anyone interested in the ethical considerations of whaling, this vivid tale invites readers into a tumultuous period of maritime history. Ballantyne's novel remains relevant today, urging reflection on humanity'Äôs impact on marine life, while providing an exhilarating escapade that will resonate with lovers of adventure and deep-sea suspense.

This short story by J.J. Campanella falls into the categories of speculative fiction and horror with bits of Japanese anime and manga samurai tales thrown in. It is a dark two-hander and takes place in a blasted, post-apocalyptic world where the remainder of civilization is isolated to a few securely protected and walled city-states. The tale was originally written for a short story collection that was never published. The anthology aimed to retell classic fairy tales in the guise of science fiction. Readers may recognize the two characters as updated incarnations of Little Red Riding Hood and the infamous wolf. This is not a children's story.

100 ONE SENTENCE STORIES: STORIES OF EVERYDAY LIFE, INSIGNIFICANT YET BEAUTIFUL, CAN BE JUST AS POWERFUL AS THE EPIC TALES

Short stories offer a concentrated dose of quality literary experience. They provide quick, accessible insights into the lives of other people, whether they're fictional or real. They can also be read quickly and easily, which is why they're especially popular among busy people who want to get in as much reading as possible without sacrificing quality.

In addition to being great for getting more information in less time (and thus fitting into our fast-paced lives), short stories can also get into someone's head in ways that longer works can't—a fact borne out by the many instances where writers have published collections of their own fictional works over time. In effect, these writers have created their own little universes through which we can walk and explore.

And that is exactly what we offer here.

Montague Rhodes James is cited as perhaps the greatest English writer of ghost stories, an opinion few would disagree with.
James was born on 1st August 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate but at age 3 the family went to live at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.
From early childhood he had a passion for mediaeval books and antiques. He was educated initially as a boarder at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, west London, before gaining a scholarship to Eton and thence Cambridge where he gained a double first, becoming a distinguished linguist and mediaevalist.
Before the Great War vacations were usually spent touring Europe absorbing cultures and references for his later writing.
A man of enormous knowledge it was said he timed his breakfast egg whilst he completed the Times crossword.
Many of his elegant yet terrifying tales were created by discarding the prevailing gothic cliches and placing his characters and narrative in a realistic setting. Thereby the stories gained atmosphere and menace on a grand scale and he was famed as the originator of the antiquarian ghost story.
Although story-telling and writing these 30 or so tales was a hobby, when published their effect transformed the genre and still chill the bones in our more modern times.
James was also a medievalist scholar and translator whose work remains highly respected. He was also Provost of Eton College between 1918 and 1936.
M R James died on 12th June 1936 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. He was 73.

One of "the best writers of our time" (Ann Patchett) offers this hilarious yet haunting cycle of stories.

John Irving writes of Allan Gurganus: "His narration becomes a Greek chorus, Sophocles in North Carolina." Since the explosive publication of Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All decades back, Gurganus has dazzled readers as "the most technically gifted and morally responsive writer of his generation" (John Cheever).

These ten classic tales attest to the growing depth of his genius. Offering characters antic and tragic, Gurganus charts the human condition as we live it now. His parables recall William Faulkner's scope, Flannery O'Connor's corrosive wit. We encounter a seaside couple fighting to save their dog from Maine's fierce undertow; a mortician whose dedication to his departed clients exceeds all legal limits. A virginal seventy-eight-year-old grammar-school librarian has her only erotic encounter with a Joe Exotic–like polyamorous snake farmer. In the lead-off story, already excerpted in the New Yorker, cholera strikes a rural village in 1850 and citizens blame their doomed young doctor, who saved hundreds. A sublime ventriloquist, Gurganus again proves himself among our wisest writers.

Written in Greek by the only Roman emperor who was also a philosopher, without any intention of publication, the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius offer a remarkable series of challenging spiritual reflections and exercises developed as the emperor struggled to understand himself and make sense of the universe. While the Meditations were composed to provide personal consolation and encouragement, Marcus Aurelius also created one of the greatest of all works of philosophy: a timeless collection that has been consulted and admired by statesmen, thinkers and readers throughout the centuries.
