Gender History - A Very Short...

This volume introduces the field of gender history—its origins, development, reception, recalibrations, and frictions. It offers a set of working definitions of gender as a descriptive category and as a category of historical analysis, tracing the emergence, usage, and applicability of these entwined subjects.

Inevitably political, gender history has taken aim at the broader field of historical narrative by asking who counts as a historical subject, what difference gender makes, and how attention to it subverts reigning assumptions of what power, culture, economics, and identity have been in the past—and what they are today. The book explores how gender analysis has changed interpretations of the histories of slavery, capitalism, migration, and empire.

As a field, gender history has been extraordinarily influential in shaping several generations of scholars and students. And, as part of the movement toward gender equality that is key to modern western progress, gender history has been caught up in the culture wars that continue to shape post-global society. The practice of gender history has always run up against the forces of race, class, and sexuality that challenge the singularity of gender itself as an explanatory category of historical analysis. That powerful, unruly tension is at the heart of this Very Short Introduction.

In this innovative and concise work, Israeli politician Benjamin Netanyahu offers a compelling approach to understanding and fighting the increase in domestic and international terrorism throughout the world. Citing diverse examples from around the globe, Netanyahu demonstrates that domestic terrorist groups are usually no match for an advanced technological society which can successfully roll back terror without any significant curtailment of civil liberties. But Netanyahu sees an even more potent threat from the new international terrorism which is increasingly the product of Islamic militants, who draw their inspiration and directives from Iran and its growing cadre of satellite states. The spread of fundamentalist Islamic terrorism, coupled with the possibility that Iran will acquire nuclear weapons, poses a more frightening threat from an adversary less rational and therefore less controllable than was Soviet Communism. How democracies can defend themselves against this new threat concludes this provocative book.

Puerto Rico’s economic history is a complex narrative shaped by its geography, colonial past, and evolving relationship with the United States. As an island strategically positioned in the Caribbean, Puerto Rico has long been a crossroads of trade and cultural exchange. Its economic transformations have been influenced by global markets, shifting policies, and the resilience of its people. From the early days of indigenous trade and Spanish colonial rule to its modern struggles with debt and recovery, the island’s economy has undergone dramatic shifts that reflect broader historical forces.
Before European contact, Puerto Rico’s indigenous Taíno population lived in a society largely based on subsistence farming, fishing, and trade with neighboring islands. The arrival of Spanish colonizers in 1493 fundamentally altered the island’s economic structure, introducing mercantilist policies that prioritized resource extraction for the benefit of Spain. The encomienda system, which forced indigenous labor into agricultural production and mining, marked the beginning of Puerto Rico’s long history of external economic control. As sugarcane, coffee, and tobacco plantations expanded, the island became increasingly dependent on these cash crops, with African slaves and, later, poor laborers fueling the agricultural economy.
In 1898, Puerto Rico’s economic trajectory changed abruptly when the United States took control following the Spanish-American War. The transition from Spanish to American rule reshaped trade networks, introducing new economic policies that favored U.S. business interests. The Foraker Act of 1900 established a civilian government but left Puerto Rico politically and economically subordinate to the United States. The shift from a Spanish mercantile system to an American capitalist framework brought opportunities but also deep inequalities.

“Starr Casas guides you to understand the traditions and very much draws upon the lessons she’s learned over a lifetime of Conjure, but she also makes it abundantly clear that you are a magical container yourself, and your powers of enchantment are limited only by your imagination.”—from the foreword by Cory Thomas HutchesonThe Definitive Guide to Container and Jar MagicOne of the oldest and most traditional forms of magic, container spells are used for all sorts of purposes, from love to protection to money, and are an increasingly popular style of spellcasting. Container magic is known for its simplicity, featuring ingredients and containers commonly found in the home. Containers range from the portable, such as charm bags and coffee containers, to larger containers, such as living plants and tire planters. Container Conjure teaches readers, armed with nothing more than a handful of simple ingredients and their discernment, the ins and outs of performing container magic for themselves.Starr Casas is an acknowledged authority on and master of Conjure-style container magic. In Container Conjure, Mama Starr teaches you how to load your own containers and maintain control over your spellcasting. Starr’s container magic method is not limited to jars; she also uses dolls, sachets, fruit, and other organic material as “containers,” making this form of magic accessible to practitioners at any level.
