The community has eliminated pain and suffering, but also emotions and individuality by removing memories of the past. As Jonas is chosen to be the next Receiver of Memory, he begins to understand that this utopia has come at a great cost. Through the memories that he receives from the current Receiver, known as The Giver, Jonas experiences the full spectrum of human emotions, both good and bad, which his community has suppressed. He learns of love, joy, war, and loss. This knowledge causes Jonas to question the morality of his society, and he ultimately decides that he must leave in search of a better way of life. The book explores the themes of memory, freedom, individuality, and the importance of emotions in human experience.
