Prosper Mérimée's Short Stories exemplifies the art of the novella, showcasing Mérimée's masterful craftsmanship in storytelling and character development. His narratives weave together a rich tapestry of themes including love, jealousy, and fate, often set against the backdrop of historical and societal dilemmas. The concise yet powerful prose employs a distinctive blend of realism and romanticism, revealing the complexities of human emotions and the moral ambiguities that underpin social interactions. Mérimée's sharp wit and keen observations illuminate the lives of both noble and common characters, inviting readers to explore the profound depths of their experiences within the social fabric of 19th-century France and beyond. Prosper Mérimée (1803-1870) was a pivotal figure in the French literary scene, influencing the Realist movement while concurrently drawing from his extensive travels throughout Europe. His nuanced understanding of cultural contexts and historical narratives can be credited to his background in law and his relationships with notable figures of his time, including George Sand and Stendhal. Mérimée's fascination with the themes of passion and betrayal reflects not only personal experiences but also the broader philosophical inquiries of his era. A luminous new recording of Jules Verne’s modern classic read by Aria Mia Loberti, star of Netflix’s limited series adaptation of All the Light We Cannot See
“The year 1866 was signalized by a remarkable incident…Vessels had been met by ‘an enormous thing,’ a long object, spindle-shaped, occasionally phosphorescent, and infinitely larger and more rapid in its movements than a whale.”
When French scientist Professor Aronnax agrees to investigate a series of attacks by a mysterious sea monster, he begins an incredible underwater journey, taking along his loyal assistant Conseil and master harpooner Ned. They eventually join Captain Nemo and traverse a distance of thousands of leagues throughout many seas, finding exotic settings, surprise encounters, and unforeseen dangers in their epic adventure, a tour-de-force of imagination.
Jules Verne was remarkably successful in foretelling the wonders science held for the future. This, his most famous novel, earned him the title of “Father of Science Fiction.”

For Fans of the Liz Talbot Mystery Series… Postcards From Stella Maris is a collection of five short stories for fans of the series who might be interested, for example, in Colleen's backstory. I wrote the short story “Common Knowledge” for myself years ago, as a way to explore what happened to Colleen. As you might imagine, it's not as light as the series in general. This story has never been published anywhere before. “Eviction” is the story of how Liz first met Rhett, her golden retriever, back when she was married to Scott the Scoundrel. This story is also not lighthearted, and it likewise has never been published before. “Hogwash” originally appeared in Spinetingler Magazine. This is a fun little case which introduces the character of Zeke Lyerly, who appears in Lowcountry Bonfire. “Highlights and Hot Lead” originally appeared in The Petigru Review. This is a Stella Maris slice of life story featuring Shannelle Johnson, a local judge's wife, and it takes place entirely at Phoebe's Day Spa. “Everything is Relative” is a peek inside a Talbot family Thanksgiving. A few of Mamma's recipes are included at the end. If by chance you’ve stumbled on this collection of stories, but you’ve never read a Liz Talbot mystery, I would encourage you to start with Lowcountry Boil (A Liz Talbot Mystery, Book 1) and come back to these stories later. I so hope you enjoy these glimpses into Liz Talbot’s formative years, her unfortunate first marriage, and her life between major cases. Warmly, Susan M. Boyer

There is something about the number 3.

The Ancient Greeks believed 3 was the perfect number, and in China 3 has always been a lucky number, and they know a thing or two.

Most religions also have 3 this and 3 that and, of course, in these more modern times, three’s a crowd may be too many, except when it’s a ménage à trois. It seems good things usually come in threes.

Whatever history and culture says WE think 3, a hat-trick of stories, is a great number to explore themes and literary avenues that classic authors were so adept at creating.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
The plot of the book is almost identical to the story presented in the first three sonnets of the Fungi from Yuggoth. In other words, the protagonist in a peculiar bookstore purchases a book of extraordinary and dangerous power for a paltry sum of money.
This is only a fragment of the story, likely written during the period when Lovecraft was experimenting with prose to improve his own texts.
