Summary

Kenya covers a total land area of 582,646 km2. This land area is classified in terms of agricultural potential as: 12.7% of medium to high potential for agricultural production; 11.5% of arable land, subject to periodic droughts; 70.7% of drylands; and 5.6% of non-agricultural land. High population densities are more prevalent in areas of high agricultural potential than those of low potential (drylands). Most of Kenya's population (approx. 80%) lives in rural areas and therefore depends on agriculture and livestock for food and income. This book reviews sustainable technological options for land and water management and that are appropriate to soil and moisture conservation in drylands areas of Kenya. Of significant importance are: Environment and Resource Conservation in Semi-Arid Kenya; Dryland agriculture and conservation technologies in Kenya; Sustainable Soil Management Technologies for Effective Erosion Control in Semi-Arid Kenya; Development of Sustainable Conservation Techniques for Dryland Agriculture in Semi-arid Kenya; Agroforestry for Environmental Conservation in Dryland Environments of Kenya; Carbon Sequestration in Dryland Soils; Integrated Watershed Resource Management in Semi-arid Kenya; Runoff Water Management Systems for Dryland Agriculture in Semi-Arid Kenya; Land and Water Management for Poverty Alleviation: Experiences from Iiuni Watershed, Machakos County, Kenya; and Participatory Role of Communities in Sustainable Development and Management of Resources in semi - arid environments of Kenya

People all over America enjoy some of the best dental care in the world. We enjoy the expertise of 201,927 actively practicing dentists in the US.Many of us create long-term, family-wide relationships with our trusted dentists and have enjoyed some new technologies along the way. We are all beginning to hear about innovations in dentistry and discoveries about the relationship of dental health to overall well-being.What if we thought about dental health as the foundation for physical health?WebMD notes that “up to 91 percent of patients with heart disease have periodontitis, compared to 66 percent of people with no heart disease. The two conditions have several risk factors, such as smoking, an unhealthy diet, and excess weight. And some suspect that periodontitis has a direct role in raising the risk for heart disease.”These new ideas and evidence-based innovations are bubbling up all over the country, and we call this biologic dentistry. That can mean many things, so we need to sort out the evidence-based innovations from the hopeful theories. __________________________American Dental Association, Health Policy Institute, https://www.ada.org/resources/research/health-policy-institute/dentist-workforce#:~:text=Dentist%20workforce%20FAQs,dentists%20per%20100%2C000%20U.S.%20population, accessed July 27, 2022.Joanne Barker, WEB MD, Oral Health: The Mouth-Body Connection, https://www.webmd.com/oral-health/features/oral-health-the-mouth-body-connection, Accessed July 27, 2022.These new ideas and evidence-based innovations are bubbling up all over the country, and we call this biologic dentistry. That can mean many things, so we need to sort out the evidence-based innovations from the hopeful theories. One of America’s top champions of biologic dentistry is Dr. Robert Herzog, a general dentist with twenty-five years of experience practicing in Albany, NY. As a trained and gifted engineer who later completed training as a general dentist, Dr. Herzog has made a passion out of sorting out the best innovative new processes and tools. He wants to educate people on what they should know but perhaps don't know yet.Dr. Herzog’s new book Biologic Dentistry and a Better You constructs a well-engineered bridge you can safely traverse to a place to better look at the marvels of holistic dentistry. You can stop and absorb the original new ideas rushing to meet you. You can move closer to your horizon and consider some carefully curated holistic ideas about biologic dentistry and its impact on your total health.Dr. Herzog offers a fascinating view of the mouth-body connection and the danger most of us face with mercury amalgam fillings. Many of us have different and dissimilar metals in our mouths, which can create microcurrents and, consequently, brain fog.He champions cleaner methods, safer extractions, 3D x-ray CT imaging, ozone and lasers, solutions for jaw disorders, better breathing and sleep, the lymphatic system, retaining wisdom teeth, and discusses newly revealed dangers of root canals.Biologic Dentistry and a Better You helps us visualize our family’s dental health from a new perspective. It’s not just about teeth anymore. Medical science now embraces the electrifying realization that the body is deeply interconnected. When something isn’t right, it often shows up in the mouth. "

A comprehensive study of the Late Cretaceous, duck-billed dinosaur, featuring insights on its origins, anatomy, and more.

Hadrosaurs—also known as duck-billed dinosaurs—are abundant in the fossil record. With their unique complex jaws and teeth perfectly suited to shred and chew plants, they flourished on Earth in remarkable diversity during the Late Cretaceous. So ubiquitous are their remains that we have learned more about dinosaurian paleobiology and paleoecology from hadrosaurs than we have from any other group. In recent years, hadrosaurs have been in the spotlight. Researchers around the world have been studying new specimens and new taxa seeking to expand and clarify our knowledge of these marvelous beasts. This volume presents the results of an international symposium on hadrosaurs, sponsored by the Royal Tyrrell Museum and the Royal Ontario Museum, where scientists and students gathered to share their research and their passion for duck-billed dinosaurs. A uniquely comprehensive treatment of hadrosaurs, the book encompasses not only the well-known hadrosaurids proper, but also Hadrosaouroidea, allowing the former group to be evaluated in a broader perspective. The 36 chapters are divided into six sections—an overview, new insights into hadrosaur origins, hadrosaurid anatomy and variation, biogeography and biostratigraphy, function and growth, and preservation, tracks, and traces—followed by an afterword by Jack Horner.

“Well designed, handsome and fantastically well edited (credit there to Patricia Ralrick), congratulations are deserved to the editors for pulling together a vast amount of content, and doing it well. The book contains a huge quantity of information on these dinosaurs.” —Darren Naish, co-author of Tetrapod Zoology, Scientific American

“Hadrosaurs have not had the wide publicity of their flesh-eating cousins, the theropods, but this remarkable dinosaur group offers unique opportunities to explore aspects of palaeobiology such as growth and sexual dimorphism. In a comprehensive collection of papers, all the hadrosaur experts of the world present their latest work, exploring topics as diverse as taxonomy and stratigraphy, locomotion and skin colour.” —Michael Benton, University of Bristol

It is difficult to ignore the effortless cool of a saber-toothed tiger. The fanged feline was equipped with the savage strength of a lion, the lethal stealth of a puma, the intimidating gait of a black bear, and the strapping, muscular arms of a gorilla. Amazingly, however, those traits did not stand out as much as the long, dagger-like fangs that earned the Smilodon its famous nickname. The saber-toothed tiger, legend has it, was as ferocious as it was fearless, often tackling beasts twice their size. Saber-toothed tigers were arguably the most fabled of all the Ice Age creatures.
Since Georges Cuvier recognized the specimens as an extinct elephant species near the end of the 18th century, various finds of mammoth fossils, particularly in places where they were well preserved in the cold, have made the woolly mammoth perhaps the most popular extinct animal outside of the dinosaurs. Standing around 10 feet tall and weighing several tons, woolly mammoths seem like the stuff of legend, but ancient cave art indicated that unlike dinosaurs, woolly mammoths were contemporaries of early humans, with the last ones going extinct only about 4,000 years ago. All of that explains why people have long been fascinated by woolly mammoths and have even envisioned bringing them back to life via genetics sometime in the future.
Saber-Toothed Tigers and Woolly Mammoths: The History of the World’s Most Famous Prehistoric Mammals looks at the origins of the famous animals, the fossil finds, and theories regarding their extinction.

As the snow melts and the spring approaches, the animal kingdom awakens. In Summer World, Bernd Heinrich, the bestselling author of Winter World, brings us an up-close and personal view of that awakening and rebirth. Almost all life on the surface of the earth derives its energy from the sun, either directly through photosynthesis or indirectly by consuming plants, making summer the time when nature is most active-feeding, fighting, mating, and nesting. From frogs, wasps, and caterpillars to hummingbirds and woodpeckers, Heinrich explores these animals' adaptations for surviving and procreating during the short window of summer, and he delights in the seemingly infinite feats of animal inventiveness he discovers there. Infused with his inexhaustible enchantment with nature, Summer World encourages a sense of wonder and discovery for the natural world and its busiest season.
