Sinopse

Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award Finalist
"So what are you? Go back where you belong!"
Majority white American culture has historically marginalized people of color, who at times feel invisible and alienated and at other times are traumatized by oppression and public discrimination. This reality leads to a particular kind of aloneness: ethnic and racial loneliness.
An Indian American immigrant who grew up in white Southern culture, Prasanta Verma names and sheds light on the realities of ethnic loneliness. She unpacks the exhausting effects of cultural isolation, the dynamics of marginalization, and the weight of being other. In the midst of disconnection and erasure, she points to the longing to belong, the need to share our stories, and the hope of finding safe friendships and community. Our places of exile can become places where we find belonging—to ourselves, to others, and to God.

    Integrity in Actions - The...

Integrity is often regarded as one of the most essential virtues, yet its true meaning is far more complex than many assume. At its core, integrity is the alignment of one's actions with their values, beliefs, and principles. It is the foundation of trust, and without it, relationships—both personal and professional—are built on fragile ground. Integrity goes beyond just telling the truth; it involves living authentically and consistently, regardless of external pressures or consequences. It is about doing what is right, even when no one is watching, and staying true to one's principles, even when the path seems difficult.
To truly understand integrity, it’s important to distinguish it from honesty. While honesty is certainly a component of integrity, the latter involves a deeper commitment to ethical living. Honesty refers to the act of telling the truth, whereas integrity encompasses the broader commitment to act in a way that reflects personal moral values and societal expectations. Someone with integrity not only speaks the truth but also lives truthfully. This practice manifests in how a person carries themselves through their decisions, actions, and behaviors, and is a constant process of self-checking to ensure they remain in alignment with their ethical principles.
The importance of integrity in daily life cannot be overstated. In a world full of distractions and temptations, staying grounded in integrity can be a challenge. Yet, it is through consistent, small acts of integrity that we build our character. These small decisions may seem insignificant at the time but accumulate over a lifetime to define who we are and how others perceive us. Integrity impacts not just personal satisfaction but also how we are seen in the eyes of others. People are drawn to those who exhibit strong moral character, and trust grows in environments where integrity is consistently practiced.

Demystifying forces of the state, gangs, and revolutionary violence.

In Gang Politics, Kristian Williams examines our society's understanding of social and political violence, what gets romanticized, misunderstood, or muddled. He explores the complex intersections between "gangs" of all sorts—cops and criminals, Proud Boys and Antifa, Panthers and skinheads—arguing that government and criminality are intimately related, often sharing critical features. As society becomes more polarized and conflict more common, Williams's analysis is a crucial corrective to our usual ideas about the role violence might or should play in our social struggles.

Though people frequently use mobile technologies for news consumption, evidence from several fields shows that smaller screens and slower connection speeds pose major limitations for meaningful reading. In News and Democratic Citizens in the Mobile Era, Johanna Dunaway and Kathleen Searles demonstrate the effects of mobile devices on news attention, engagement, and recall, and identify a key cognitive mechanism underlying these effects: cognitive effort. They advance a theory that is both old and new: the costs of information-seeking curb participatory behaviors unless the benefits outweigh them. For news consumers in the mobile era, for example, mobile devices increase the time, economic, and cognitive costs associated with information-seeking. Only for a small few do the benefits of attending to the news on mobile devices outweigh the costs.

Dunaway and Searles argue that attention, engagement, and recall suffer when people consume news on mobile devices. They then investigate the implications of these effects for the news industry and for an informed democratic citizenry. Drawing on both laboratory and real-world studies, Dunaway and Searles bring the psychophysiology of news consumption to bear on the question of what we could lose in an information environment characterized by a dramatic shift in reliance on mobile devices.

The first edition of the 'small ADHD consultation', published in 2014, was originally created to provide my patients with a quick overview of the broad field of ADHD symptoms in adults as summarised as possible. It was important to me to integrate accompanying disorders and therapeutic options such as medication and coaching strategies. It is not uncommon for the underlying ADHD symptoms to be masked by disorders that develop later (such as obsessive thinking, anxiety, panic attacks and addictions). Only abnormalities in childhood, such as dreaminess or motor restlessness with impulsiveness, allow conclusions to be drawn. Patients and friends were kind enough to embellish this book with their contributions, sketches, pictures and poems. The significantly expanded 3rd edition of the 'Little ADHD Consultation' is due to the increased needs and demands of my patients and the new findings concerning ADHD. New topics such as neurofeedback, medication overview, neurobiological aspects and autistic accompanying phenomena as well as legal aspects and cannabis medication have been included. I wish you many A-HA experiences with this expansion.
