The Founding Presidents of the United States played a pivotal role in shaping the early direction of the nation. Their leadership laid the groundwork for the establishment of a new republic and the principles that would guide the country for generations. George Washington, the first President, set the tone for the presidency itself. His leadership during the Revolutionary War had earned him widespread admiration, and when the new government was formed, Washington was unanimously chosen as the first leader of the United States. His presidency established many of the precedents for the executive branch, including the creation of a Cabinet, the two-term limit, and the peaceful transfer of power.
Washington’s leadership was tested with several challenges during his presidency, most notably the issue of neutrality in foreign affairs. As tensions rose between France and Great Britain, Washington carefully navigated the country through these conflicts, urging the nation to avoid entanglement in European wars. His Farewell Address warned against permanent foreign alliances and political factions, offering advice that would resonate throughout American history. Washington’s decision to step down after two terms also set a significant precedent that would shape the expectations of future presidents.
Following Washington’s tenure, John Adams became the second President of the United States. A Federalist and a key figure in the early American Revolution, Adams had been a vocal advocate for independence and the formation of a strong central government. His presidency, however, was marked by political divisions and foreign policy struggles. The most notable event during his administration was the Quasi-War with France, which resulted from tensions over the French Revolution and the actions of the French government against American shipping.

Dorothy Kathleen Broster was born on 2nd September 1877 at Devon Lodge in Grassendale Park, Garston, Liverpool.
At 16, the family moved to Cheltenham, where she attended Cheltenham Ladies' College and then on to St Hilda’s College, Oxford to read history, where she was one of the first female students, although at this time women were not awarded degrees.
Broster served as secretary to Charles Harding Firth, a Professor of History for several years, and collaborated on several of his works. Her first two novels were co-written with a college friend, Gertrude Winifred Taylor.
With the Great War interrupting her literary ambitions she served as a Red Cross nurse at a Franco-American hospital, but returned to England with a knee infection in 1916.
After the war, she moved near to Battle in East Sussex and took up writing full-time.
In 1920 she at last received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from Oxford.
Her novels, mainly historical fiction, peaked in popularity with ‘The Flight of the Heron’, in 1925, a best-seller followed up by two sequels.
As well as poetry and various articles she also wrote several short stories, the best known of which is a classic of weird fiction ‘The Couching at the Door’ in which an artist appears to be haunted by a mysterious entity.
An intensely private individual many readers deduced from her name that she was both a man and Scottish.
D K Broster died in Bexhill Hospital on 7th February 1950. She was 73.

Climbing is one of the world's fastest-growing sports – exciting, addictive and, arguably, much more fun than going to the gym. In 2021 it made its long-awaited Olympic debut, but its journey to Tokyo has been anything but traditional. And the traditionalists would argue that it's not even a sport at all …
In Born to Climb, anthropologist and climber Zofia Reych shares with us the fascinating cultural history of rock and competition climbing. Zofia offers a fresh perspective on some of the pivotal moments and outstanding individuals of the sport, from eighteenth-century exploratory forays on rock, via the rise of climbing legends such as Emilio Comici, Wolfgang Güllich and Lynn Hill, to the limelight of the Olympic arena for the stars of today – Janja Garnbret, Adam Ondra, Shauna Coxsey and more.
But Born to Climb is much more than a celebration of the sport's famous people and places: it is an examination of modern sporting participation and culture, interwoven with the author's own climbing journey. While the writing is engaging and often funny, Zofia is not afraid to broach sensitive and often overlooked topics, including gender divide, capitalism and the tension between aesthetic and athletic approaches to climbing, in what is a must-read for all climbers.

"If there's a God, I want to see Him. It's pointless to believe in something without proof, and Krishna consciousness and meditation are methods where you can actually obtain God perception. In that way, you can see, hear and play with God. Perhaps this may sound weird, but God is really there next to you."“"My life belongs to Lord Krishna now. I’m just the servant of Krishna. I’ve never been so humble in all my life, and I feel great!”— George HarrisonAlthough George Harrison often insisted he was only a regular guy, there is quite a lot of evidence to the contrary. Throughout his often magical, turbulent, unlikely life, he selflessly raised millions for charity and still does via the good works of his charity, The Material World Foundation. Harrison was, too, the grandfather of world music, introducing audiences to be exquisite, ethereal complexity of both Indian music and the spiritually liberating Sanskrit mantras from the Vedic scriptures. Harrison was also instrumental in turning a global audience to ethical vegetarianism, reincarnation, and the Hare Krishna philosophy. In this expansive collection, there are no journalists getting in the way of the purity of George’s expansive ideas and his carefully told personal history. Here is George Harrison truly in his own words, speaking across the waters of time to generations of dedicated fans still deeply moved by this simple man’s great music, philosophical importance, and well-deserved historical significance. Here is then the absolutely perfect collection of George Harrison’s finest thoughts, recollections, and untold Beatles tales important to the collection of every fan. George Harrison MBE was an English musician and singer-songwriter who achieved international fame as the lead guitarist of the Beatles.
