Through the famous allegory of the cave and the concept of the philosopher-king, the text argues that the just soul and the just state are mirror images of one another. It covers an immense range of topics, including education, poetry, immortality, and the structure of reality. While there are a few short articles and guides addressing the challenges and complexities of leading white affinity groups, there has never been a detailed handbook exclusively for white racial affinity group facilitators. There are many challenges in facilitating these groups, including the need to have a deep theoretical understanding of racism, a high degree of racial self-awareness, sensitivity to and the ability to work with the range of skills and degrees of awareness participants bring, and strong facilitation and conflict-resolution skills. This book is the first in-depth guide for educators, mediators, workplace consultants and trainers, workplace diversity groups, community organizers, conference organizers, members of faith communities, and members of racial and social justice groups. Dr. Robin DiAngelo and Amy Burtaine, who collectively bring over twenty years of experience leading anti-racist education and racial affinity groups, present the following: · a theoretical framework for understanding racism; · a case for the value of racial affinity groups as a tool for challenging racism; · guidelines for setting up affinity groups in a variety of contexts; · the skills and perspectives needed for effective facilitation; · scenarios to illustrate common challenges; · a glossary of definitions; · exercises, discussion prompts, and assessment tools. · an extensive list of common patterns and group dynamics and how to address them This accessible guide is an important reference for anyone committed to anti-racism work.

When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Kateryna hung up her dresses, Oksana and Stanislav put down their lawyers' briefs and Oksen slammed shut his philosophy textbooks. Alongside thousands of their fellow citizens, they strapped on armour, picked up weapons and chose to risk their lives for the freedom and independence of their homeland. Many would never return.
Journalist Tom Mutch woke up in Kyiv on 24 February to a world changed for ever. Making a fateful choice to stay and cover the invasion, he witnessed the forging of an 'iron generation' of young Ukrainians. With first-hand reporting from all the major battlegrounds and front lines, The Dogs of Mariupol recounts the war's notorious encounters, such as the Battle of Kyiv and the Siege of Mariupol, but also uncovers untold stories, like the 1st Tank Brigade's desperate defence of Chernihiv and the civilian guerrilla army fighting overwhelming odds in Sumy.
This is not a triumphalist account of Ukraine's fight, however. It painstakingly documents the immense human catastrophe wrought on Ukrainian society and the divisions between those who fought and those who fled. It also delves deeper into events to answer important historical questions: could the Russian plan to capture Kyiv have succeeded? Did Ukraine make a fatal error by committing for so long to the defence of Bakhmut? And with more western support, could Ukraine have won this terrible war outright?

The Chola Empire, one of the longest-ruling dynasties in South Indian history, has origins shrouded in legend and antiquity. The early Cholas find mention in Tamil literature and ancient inscriptions, tracing their lineage back to mythical rulers. The Sangam period texts, such as the Pattinappalai and Puranaanuru, speak of the valor and governance of early Chola kings, who ruled over fertile lands along the Kaveri River. However, after a period of decline, the Cholas reemerged as a dominant force in the 9th century CE under the leadership of Vijayalaya Chola, the founder of the imperial Chola dynasty.
Vijayalaya Chola, initially a minor chieftain under the Pallavas, seized the opportunity to establish his rule in the fertile region of Thanjavur around 850 CE. This marked the resurgence of Chola power after centuries of obscurity. By defeating the Mutharaiyars, who controlled the region, Vijayalaya laid the foundation for an empire that would dominate South India for the next four centuries. Under his rule, the Cholas not only expanded their territories but also strengthened their political and military structures. He initiated temple-building activities, commissioning the construction of the temple of Nisumbhasudani in Thanjavur, a precursor to the grand temple-building tradition that would define the dynasty.
His successor, Aditya I, continued the expansion by defeating the Pallavas, thereby establishing the Cholas as a formidable power in the region. This victory marked a turning point, allowing the Cholas to assert their dominance over Tamil Nadu. Aditya I’s campaigns also extended into Kongu Nadu and the northern parts of Kerala, laying the groundwork for further expansion. His administrative policies ensured a stable governance system, which helped integrate the newly conquered regions into the Chola fold.

"[A] history of air conditioning, chronicling the numerous gimmicks, failed attempts, con jobs, and eventual successes . . . a surprisingly interesting journey." —San Francisco Book Review

The air conditioner is often hailed as one of the modern world's greatest inventions—yet nearly as often blamed for global disaster. It has changed everything from architecture to people's food habits; saved countless lives, and caused countless deaths. First appearing in 1902, when Willis Carrier, an engineer barely out of college, developed the "Apparatus for Treating Air," everyone assumed it would instantly change the world. But the story of air conditioning and its rise to ubiquity is far from simple.

In Cool, Salvatore Basile tracks two fascinating stories: the struggle to perfect an effective cooling device, and the effort to convince people that they actually needed such a thing. With a cast of characters ranging from Leonardo da Vinci to Richard Nixon and Felix the Cat, Cool showcases the myriad reactions to air conditioning as it was developed and introduced to the world. Here is a unique perspective on a common convenience: how we came to rely on it today, and how it might change radically tomorrow.
