Sinossi

In "Crito," Plato presents a profound dialogue between Socrates and his devoted friend Crito, exploring themes of justice, morality, and the individual's relationship to the state. Set in Socrates' prison cell, the text unfolds through Socratic questioning, employing a philosophical style that is dialectical and critical. The dialogue examines the ethical implications of escaping from prison, standing as a key piece within the larger context of Socratic thought and the concept of the social contract, which resonates with later political philosophy, including the works of Rousseau and Hobbes. Plato, a student of Socrates and a foundational figure in Western philosophy, penned "Crito" during a period marked by political turmoil and personal loss after the execution of his mentor. This context undoubtedly influenced his portrayal of Socratic ideals, allowing him to articulate Socrates' unwavering commitment to virtue and justice, even in the face of death. As a philosopher, Plato sought to challenge the moral complacency of Athenian society and to provoke deeper understanding of civic duties. This essential text invites readers to grapple with the tension between individual conscience and ethical obligation. "Crito" is not merely a historical artifact; it remains vividly relevant today. Those interested in ethical philosophy, political thought, and the legacy of Socratic dialogue will find rich rewards in this compelling exploration of moral integrity and civic responsibility.

Sex Beyond "Yes" - Pleasure and...

Every discussion of sexual ethics revolves around consent, but is this notion enough to help us understand good sex? How does the dominance of consent help or prevent us from negotiating the complexities of intimacy and pleasure?

Georgetown professor Quill R Kukla argues that the idea that consent is the gatekeeper between the realms of good and bad sex does not give us the tools we need to navigate pleasure and intimacy. They claim that traditional discussions of consent make no room for the reality that we can have good sex even though we may get drunk or high, or become forgetful with age, or be limited by social pressures and power relationships.

Kukla explores the ambiguous realms in which sexual agency requires much more than the ability to just say "yes" or "no" to sex. They confront moments of discomfort: How does consent work for people with dementia? Or in sex work, where sexual contracts challenge our traditional conceptions of ethical sex? How can we express our agency when exploring new kinks, where our hesitations and ambivalence are part of the thrill? Challenging listeners to think beyond reductive concepts of consent, gender, and freedom, Sex Beyond "Yes" reframes the communication and social support we need to establish sexual relationships founded on genuine respect, open discourse, and unhindered joy.

Nearly 500 years after the Spanish conquered their mighty empire, the Aztecs are often remembered today for their major capital, Tenochtitlan, as well as being fierce conquerors of the Valley of Mexico who often engaged in human sacrifice rituals. Unlike the Maya, the Aztecs are not widely viewed or remembered with nuance, in part because their own leader burned extant Aztec writings and rewrote a mythologized history explaining his empire’s dominance less than a century before the Spanish arrived. Naturally, Cortes and other Spaniards depicted the Aztecs as savages greatly in need of conversion to Catholicism. While the Maya are remembered for their astronomy, numeral system, and calendar, the Aztecs have primarily been remembered in a far narrower way, despite continuing to be a source of pride to Mexicans through the centuries.
For the Aztec, astronomy was not a purely scientific pursuit but intimately linked to religious, mythological, and ideological elements that were of the highest importance. The celestial realm held a sacred nature, as did the many gods and goddesses that dwelt there, so for all Mesoamerican cultures, astronomy was a fundamental part of their daily lives. Thus, astronomy was present in their calendars, religion, and even agriculture, and in close relation to astronomy, the concept of time was also an essential part of their worldview. The Aztec recorded many of the astronomical events they observed in codices and hieroglyphic inscriptions, but the main evidence of their deep astronomical knowledge comes from their calendar system. This information was then used to plan the orientation of buildings and ceremonial centers, which were aligned to sunrises or sunsets corresponding to special dates, such as solstices or equinoxes. Observational calendars were also used to schedule agricultural activities, as well as rituals, festivals, and celebrations, on an annual cycle.
