Sinopse

Pierre Loti's 'An Iceland Fisherman' is a powerful novel that delves into the themes of love, sacrifice, and isolation. Set against the backdrop of a small fishing village in Iceland, the book explores the complex relationships between the characters and the harsh environment they inhabit. Loti's lyrical prose and vivid descriptions transport the reader to the rugged landscape, immersing them in the lives of the fishermen and their families. The author's use of symbolism and allegory adds depth to the narrative, inviting readers to reflect on the deeper meanings hidden within the text. 'An Iceland Fisherman' is a timeless work of literature that continues to resonate with readers today. Pierre Loti, a French naval officer and prolific writer, drew inspiration for 'An Iceland Fisherman' from his travels to remote locations around the world. His firsthand experiences in exotic locales provided him with a unique perspective on human nature and the challenges of life in isolated communities. Loti's keen observations and empathy for his characters shine through in this novel, making it a compelling and thought-provoking read. I highly recommend 'An Iceland Fisherman' to readers who appreciate beautifully crafted prose, profound storytelling, and insightful reflections on the human condition. With its evocative imagery and poignant themes, this novel is a masterpiece of French literature that deserves to be experienced by all who love great literature.

America's favorite auto mechanics share reminiscences, rants, and hate mail in another time-wasting yet genuinely useful collection of highlights from their long-running radio show.
So one day the guys were at a restaurant enjoying a cake someone delivered to their table. On their way out, they realized their mistake: It wasn't their cake after all. It was Grammy's birthday cake, bound for a party at a nearby table. They apologized later on the air.
Tom and Ray lead colorful (not to mention grimy) lives, and each week they share the hilarity with millions of radio listeners. Their latest collection will delight diehard fans and anyone who cares about cars and good humor. Along with the usual dose of belly laughs, it includes Tommy's memories of his misadventures in the US Army, stories from the guys about their beloved pal, Vito, and the debut performance of the Click and Clack Barbershop Quartet Minus Two singing "Goodbye My Coney Island Baby". That the debut was also the farewell performance is no coincidence.

A British Royal Air Force pilot recounts his 25-year career in the cockpit during the Cold War in this military memoir. During a twenty-five-year flying career in the RAF, Jerry Pook has flown Hunter Fighter/Ground Attack aircraft in the Gulf, Harriers in West Germany, the supersonic Starfighter with the Dutch Air Force, the Harrier in Belize, Central America and the Tornado bomber at the Tri-national Tornado Training Establishment where he trained German and Italian pilots and navigators. Jerry had a long relationship with the Harrier Fighter/Ground Attack vertical take-off aircraft. This he flew in West Germany at the height of the Cold War operating from Wildenrath and off-base operations with Field Wing operations based in the fields and woods of the German countryside. Jerry saw action during the Falklands War when based on HMS Hermes and flying one of the few RAF Harriers in the Ground Attack role in support of the troops fighting ashore. He then enjoyed flying the American-built Starfighter RF 104G during a three-year exchange tour with the Dutch Air Force—he describes the Starfighter as “beautiful to fly, smooth and sophisticated, supremely fast and powerful—if you took liberties with it you knew it would kill you in an instant.” After three years with No 1 (Fighter) Squadron and again flying the Harrier, he moved to the then new Tornado, flying in its bomber role. This he continued to fly operationally and in the instructional role for thirteen years until grounded from military flying for medical reasons.

The National Book Award– and Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Color Purple explores our modern world with “compassion, courage, and humor” (Booklist).   Alice Walker once ached for retirement, but in the turmoil of the Democratic primaries and the economic collapse of 2008, she realized she simply had a great deal more to say. Leaving her meditation cushion behind, she found herself traveling the world once again to speak of our intertwined personal, spiritual, and political destinies through ruminations, poems, essays, and letters.   At the height of her literary powers, this revered American novelist, poet, essayist, and activist invites readers on a journey of political awakening and spiritual insight. While visiting subjects she has addressed throughout her career—including racism, Africa, Palestinian solidarity, and Cuba—as well as addressing emergent issues, such as the presidency of Barack Obama and health care, Walker explores her conflicting impulses to retreat into inner contemplation and to remain deeply engaged with the world.   Rich with humor and wisdom, and informed by Walker’s unique eye for the details of human and natural experience, The Cushion in the Road is “a heartfelt response to a new generation’s yearning for public service” (Kirkus Reviews).   “Walker’s concern for the state of humanity and the planet comes through as impassioned and genuine.” —Publishers Weekly   “Quintessential Alice Walker: edgy, demanding, prayerful, loving, and aware. An essential companion for those who wish to be a force for positive change in our perpetually challenging world.” —ForeWord Magazine   “Infused with a quiet grace and gentle resolve to act responsibly.” —Kirkus Reviews

'Four million quid. There it was, inches away from me on a hotel table. Not in conventional currency, but in the world's deadliest commodity. Heroin.' As part of Scotland Yard's undercover team, it was Peter Bleksley's job to infiltrate some of the capital's most dangerous gangs and bring them down. For ten years, he went deeper into the criminal underworld than any cop had before him. Meeting with dealers, gangland leaders and members of the IRA and the Mafia, he lived the life of the Great Pretender, constantly changing his identity to ensure his cover was never blown. Whilst undeniably thrilling work at times, it came at a heavy price. The more successful he was at bringing criminals to justice, the longer the list of those who wanted revenge became. Even now, Peter looks over his shoulder in case someone should wish to act on an old threat. In The Gangbuster, Bleksley draws us into the world of drugs, violence and covert operations he inhabited for so long in the pursuit of justice. Now a renowned policing and crime expert seen on the BBC and as the Chief on Channel 4's Hunted, Peter Bleksley reputation still precedes him the world over.
