Sinopsis

Illustrated with over 150 color photographs, Crested Geckos is an authoritative, visual guide to this very popular lizard species. For their amazing colors and patterns, low maintenance requirements, longevity, and attractive appearance, crested geckos have captured the fancy of hobbyists. Crested Geckos provides guidelines for keepers who wish to select a crested gecko to add to their vivarium and to maintain their pet in excellent health and condition. Author Philippe de Vosjoli provides an introduction to crested gecko, including information about purchasing a healthy pet, handling, heating and housing, water and feeding, life cycle and sexing, and breeding. A separate chapter on diseases and disorders provides solid info on the health needs of these rewarding reptiles, including recognizing signs of disease, tail loss and pelvic deformities. The author has also written two chapters devoted to the color of crested geckos, their most alluring feature for many herpetoculturists. The chapters include discussions of color changes (as the gecko matures) and morphs, heavily illustrated with photographs of unusually colored crested geckos. For crested gecko keepers looking to expand their home populations, a chapter on the Rhacodactylus species describes five species with similar requirements despite their significantly different appearances, from the medium-sized knobby-headed gargoyle gecko to the giant Rhacodactylus leachianus.

“Some of the most fascinating, intriguing and, yes, brutal episodes of the region’s past written in the fast-paced, involving style of an adventure novel” (Italy Magazine, “Book of the Week”).   With the perfect fusion of history, art, architecture, superb natural beauty, and weather—not to mention magnificent traditions of food and drink—Tuscany has cast its spell over visitors for centuries. What is it that makes this exquisite part of Italy so seductive?   To answer this question, Alistair Moffat embarks on a journey into Tuscany’s past. From the flowering of the Etruscan civilization in the seventh century BC through the rise of the powerful medieval communes of Arezzo, Lucca, Pisa, and Florence and the birth of the Renaissance, he underlines both the area’s regional uniqueness and the vital role it has played in the history of the whole of Italy. Insightful, readable, and imbued with the author’s own enthusiasm for Tuscany, this book includes a wealth of information not found in tourist guides. As the Herald raves, “If you travel to the region, you’ll want to take with you Moffat’s Tuscany: A History; and if you read the book, you’ll want to travel to the region.”   “Compelling . . . Moffat takes the reader on a delicious trip through the geography, history and culture of the region—an impressive book.” —The Sunday Telegraph   “Facts and figures are woven into a sun-drenched meditation on the character of the place and its people.” —The Scotsman

A “brilliant history of the USA’s underwater exploits,” filled with photos (Books Monthly).   In 1900, the US Navy took its first submarine, the Holland VI, into service. With a single torpedo tube, it had a crew of six, weighed eighty-two tons, and traveled submerged at 6.2mph at a depth of up to seventy-five feet.   Contrast this to the 18 Ohio Class nuclear-powered submarines that entered service in 1981. Weighing 21,000 tons with a crew of 155, its underwater speed is estimated at thirty mph at a depth of some one thousand feet. It carries sixteen nuclear warhead ballistic missiles with a range of 4,600 miles.   This photographic history in the Images of War series provides detailed insight into the many US Navy submarine classes. Particularly fascinating is the post Second World War program of nuclear powered submarines stating with the Nautilus and progressing to the Skate, Thresher, Sturgeon, Los Angeles, and George Washington. Admiral Hyman G Rickover’s role as father of the nuclear navy is also examined in detail.
