Sinopse

In "The Defence of Poesy," Philip Sidney eloquently articulates the role of poetry in society, positioning it as both a moral and artistic endeavor. Written in the late 16th century, amidst the flourishing of the English Renaissance, Sidney adopts a sophisticated blend of prose and verse to advocate for poetry's capacity to inspire virtue and foster emotional truths. The text engages with classical and contemporary philosophical thought, countering prevailing criticisms against poets with intellectual rigor. Through his deft use of rhetorical devices and vivid imagery, Sidney seeks to defend the poet's imaginative faculties, asserting that poetry surpasses mere entertainment by elevating the human experience. Philip Sidney was a prominent Elizabethan courtier, soldier, and poet whose life was marked by a dedication to literature and ideals of chivalry. As a member of a noble family and a contemporary of other literary giants, like Edmund Spenser and William Shakespeare, Sidney's insights reflect the cultural and intellectual currents of his time. His experiences in court and war enriched his understanding of human nature, contributing to the depth and passion evident in his defense of poetry. For readers seeking a deeper understanding of the power of poetic expression, Sidney's "The Defence of Poesy" is an essential text that illuminates the intersection of art and ethics. This work not only defends the craft of poetry but also invites readers to explore their own emotional and moral compass through the lens of literature. It is a compelling read for anyone interested in the enduring significance of poetry in shaping thought and society.

Neem Karoli Baba, known to his followers as Maharaj-ji, was a mystic saint and devotee of Hanuman. Maharaj-ji’s teachings were simple and universal. He often said, “Sub Ek” — All is One. He taught us to “love everyone, serve everyone, remember God, and tell the truth.” Strongly connected to Hanuman, God in the form of a monkey, Maharaj-ji taught in a highly personalized, non-traditional way that reflected the deep devotion of the bhakti path of the heart. Known as the “Miracle Baba” throughout north India, he manifested many siddhis (powers), such as being in two places at once or putting devotees in samadhi (elevated state of God consciousness) at the touch of a finger. Here is the essence of his remarkable life and teachings. He is known outside India for being the spiritual master of a number of Americans who traveled to India in the '60s and '70s, including Ram Dass and Bhagavan Das, as well as musician Krishna Das. For many years Baba was closely associated with silent sadhu Baba Hari Dass.

Dr. Richard Alpert, a former Harvard professor was an icon of the hippie, LSD-fueled revolution of the '60s. After that, on a trip to India - like Clark Kent changing into Superman - he became the much-beloved spiritual teacher Baba Ram Das. His '70s iconic book, Be Here Now, turned on a generation to the deep, nonsectarian spirituality within us all. Krishna Das is an American vocalist known for performing Vedic devotional music known as kirtan. Bhagavan Das is an American yogi who lived for six years in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. He is a bhakti yogi, kirtan singer, spiritual teacher, and writer. Baba Hari Dass was initiated in the Vairagi Vaishnava order in 1942. Dass has practiced continual silence since 1952. This is the true story of each of the spiritual "Gang of four" and their master and deep inspiration Neem Karol Baba.

After her beloved dad got addicted to right-wing talk radio and Fox News, Jen Senko feared he would never be the same again . . .

Frank Senko had always known how to have a good time. But after a job change forced Frank to begin a long car commute every day, his daughter Jen noticed changes in his personality and beliefs. Long hours on the road listening to talk radio commentators like Rush Limbaugh sucked her father into a suspicion-laden worldview dominated by conspiracy theories, fake news, and rants about the "coastal elite" and "libtards" trying to destroy America.

Over the course of a few years, Jen's dad went from a nonpolitical, open-minded Democrat to a radical, angry, and intolerant right-wing devotee who became a stranger to those closest to him. As politics began to take precedence over everything else in her father's life, Jen was mystified. What happened to her dad? Jen began the search for answers, and found them . . . as well as stories from countless other families like her own.

Based on the award-winning documentary, The Brainwashing of My Dad uncovers the alarming right-wing strategy to wield the media as a weapon against our very democracy.
