  On November 29, 1781, Captain Collingwood of the British ship Zong commanded his crew to throw overboard one-third of his cargo: a shipment of Africans bound for slavery in America. The captain believed his ship was off course, and he feared there was not enough drinking water to last until landfall. This book is the first to examine in detail the deplorable killings on the Zong, the lawsuit that ensued, how the murder of 132 slaves affected debates about slavery, and the way we remember the infamous Zong today. 
   
   
   
  Historian James Walvin explores all aspects of the Zong's voyage and the subsequent trial—a case brought to court not for the murder of the slaves but as a suit against the insurers who denied the owners' claim that their "cargo" had been necessarily jettisoned. The scandalous case prompted wide debate and fueled Britain's awakening abolition movement. Without the episode of the Zong, Walvin contends, the process of ending the slave trade would have taken an entirely different moral and political trajectory. He concludes with a fascinating discussion of how the case of the Zong, though unique in the history of slave ships, has come to be understood as typical of life on all such ships.

  The Black Death - Plague and...

  The story of the Black Death begins long before it reached the shores of Europe. At the heart of the devastation was a bacterium called Yersinia pestis, the microorganism responsible for one of the deadliest pandemics in human history. This pathogen is believed to have originated in the arid plains of Central Asia, where it lived in a natural reservoir within rodent populations, particularly marmots. These animals, though mostly isolated in remote areas, became the starting point for a chain of transmission that would eventually span continents. 
  Early outbreaks of plague-like illnesses were recorded in China and other parts of Asia as early as the 13th century, suggesting that the bacterium was already circulating in the region. However, it was the growing network of trade routes, especially the Silk Road, that allowed the disease to move rapidly from one community to another. Merchants, caravans, and travelers unknowingly carried infected fleas and rats from one trading hub to the next, creating a direct path for the disease to follow. 
  One of the most significant early episodes linked to the Black Death's arrival in Europe occurred during the Mongol siege of the Crimean city of Caffa (modern-day Feodosiya) in 1346. According to some historical accounts, the Mongols, after suffering an outbreak in their own ranks, used the infected corpses of their dead as biological weapons by catapulting them over the city walls. While the historical accuracy of this account is debated, it symbolizes the critical role Caffa played as a point of transmission. From this port city, fleeing Genoese merchants are believed to have carried the disease back to Italy by ship, bringing the plague directly into European trading centers.

  On Tuesday, June 9, 1964, police attacked more than 600 Black men, women, and children inside First African Baptist Church (Tuscaloosa, Alabama), where Reverend Martin Luther King had launched the Tuscaloosa campaign for integration three months earlier. As the group gathered to march, they faced over seventy law enforcement officers and hundreds more deputized white citizens and Klansmen eager to end their protests for good. Police smashed the historic church's stained-glass windows with water hoses and fired rounds of tear gas inside. As demonstrators streamed from the church, many choking and soaked, they beat them with nightsticks, cattle prods, and axe handles, arrested nearly a hundred, and sent over thirty to the hospital. Here this event is recounted through the eyes of locals—a charismatic Black preacher trained by Rev. King, an aging police chief, the Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan, and Black women who were the backbone of the protests.

  Venetian Empire - The Grand...

  When we think of Venice, we think of masks, canals, murals and frescoes, and little “gondoliers” with picturesque boats. Venice, indeed, has an impressive artistic history. But did you know that Venice was also, for a while, a considerably-sized empire? 
  Although no enduring historic records associate with the creation of Venice, the Republic of Venice's history is typically said to start at 12 a.m. on Friday, March 25th, AD 421, when authorities from Padua established the city to develop a trading center in that area of northern Italy. 
  The creation of the Venetian republic is said to have accompanied the starting of the church of St. James at the exact same time. Still, the church (which is believed to be that of Saint Giacomo di Rialto) dates no earlier than the l lth century, and no after the mid-twelfth century. 
  According to legend, the area's first residents were Hun and Germanic refugees escaping succeeding waves of Hun and Germanic intrusions from the mid-second to mid-fifth centuries, who originated from near Roman cities like Padua, Aquileia, Treviso, Altino, and Concordia (contemporary Concordia Sagittaria), and the undefended countryside.
