Summary

Doménikos Theotokópoulos, widely known as El Greco (The Greek), was a leading painter, sculptor and architect of the Spanish Renaissance. The seascapes of Ivan Aivazovsky (1817-1900) made his name in Russia, his native country where he was a painter of the court of Nicholas I, yet his fame barely extended beyond these borders. Master of the Sublime, he made the ocean the principal subject of his work. Sometimes wild and raging, sometimes calm and peaceful, the life of the ocean is composed of as many allegories as the human condition. Like Turner, whom he knew and whose art he admired, he never painted outside in nature, nor did he make preliminary sketches; hispaintings were the fruit of his exceptional memory. With more than 6,000 canvasses, Aivazovsky was one of the most prolific painters of his time.

Learn from five remarkable professors in this set of One Day University presentations on the history and evolution of popular music. The most basic definition of music is simply the art of arranging sounds in time through the elements of melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre. And in fact it is one of the universal cultural aspects of all human societies. It's performed with a vast range of instruments and vocal techniques and the common saying ""it's music to my ears"" underlines the notion that music is quite simply something people enjoy listening to! In every culture, music is an important part of people's way of life, as it plays a key role in religious rituals, rites of passage ceremonies, social activities and cultural activities of every type.

Lauren Weedman is not okay. She's living what should be the good life in sunny Los Angeles. After a gig as a correspondent with The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, she scored parts in blockbuster movies, which led to memorable recurring roles on HBO's Hung and Looking. She had a loving husband and an adorable baby boy. In these comedic essays, she turns a piercingly observant, darkly funny lens on the ways her life is actually not okay. She tells the story of her husband's affair with their babysitter, her first and only threesome, a tattoo gone horribly awry, and how the birth of her son caused mama drama with her own mother and birth mother with laugh-out-loud wit and a powerful undercurrent of vulnerability that pulls off a stunning balance between comedy and tragedy.
