Sinopse

When an elderly gentleman is returning from a visit to his wife's graveside, he is shocked to find himself the victim of a young thug. What the thug doesn't realise is that this particular gentleman has nothing to lose and will make the young man regret ever having crossed him. (Bringing the House Down) When a lady refuses to leave her bungalow for an easier life in a care home, nobody suspects the real reason behind her reluctance to go. (An Accident) Three friends risk their liberty for great financial gain, but do they reap the rewards of such daring behaviour? (Happy New Year) An SAS soldier returning from Egypt, still suffering after the kidnap and murder of his daughter, steps in with drastic action, to punish the would-be perpetrators of a similar crime. (Just Another Day) When a recently unemployed man, witnesses, and assists at a road traffic collision, he is rewarded for his bravery in a very satisfactory way. (Right Time, Right Place)

A young couple finds the perfect country cottage with one caveat - it has a horrible legend attached to it.
Edith Nesbit wrote under the name E. Nesbit, and is most famous for her stories for children, and has influenced the likes of J.K. Rowling, C.S. Lewis and P.L. Travers. She wrote over 60 books, including The Railway Children, Five Children and It, and The Story of the Treasure Seekers.
Her second, darker reputations was as a purveyor of horror stories, which are sublime in their elegance and simplicity. This story is quite simple, but when you take into account the beauty of the language, the skill of the plot movement, and the intriguing supporting characters, it really ranks high when it comes to classic ghost stories.

Equality is one of the great and lauded aims of a just society. It is rarely achieved. The system is there to be exploited by those with too much money and too many resources. Or maybe just a grudge. Our classic authors including Anton Chekhov, O Henry, Susan Glaspell, Arthur Morrison and others turn their pens to the nature of abuse. It may be gentle or laced with searing pain but always told with the sharpest of pens.

What might William Burroughs be doing in Tahrir Square at the height of the Egyptian revolution of 2011? Was there really a radical atheist insurgency in New Cairo? Where in extant science fiction do people go when they die? In these Cairo-focused stories written at the height of the Arab Spring, in its wake and its ruins, the reader is led by a colorful cast of characters through a hypnagogic urbanscape pulsating with the spectres of post-political Islam and failed revolution. Whether it is an alien abduction in “Lexi” or a Cairo-centered, futuristic retelling of an Old Testament narrative in the titular story “Emissaries” - the stories here play with notions of contemporary Egyptianness to evoke a human circus of possibility and despair that is undeniably universal at its core.
Emissaries, and other short stories is the first short story collection of Youssef Rakha's work. The short stories within this collection appeared first in the following journals:
    The Boy Jihadi (Guernica)
Thus Spoke Che Nawwarah (Kenyon Review Online)
    Emissaries (The Puritan)
Nawwah (Miranda Literary Magazine – defunct)
    Qaf (Mashallah News)
The Secret History of Atheism (Minor Literatures)
    A Father’s Counsel (BULL)
    The End Night (Litro)
“Lexi” and “The Trees Are Houses” are published for the first time. “The Trees Are Houses” was written especially for this publication.
