Summary

In 1968, nine sailors set off on the most daring race ever held: to single-handedly circumnavigate the globe nonstop. It was a feat that had never been accomplished and one that would forever change the face of sailing. Ten months later, only one of the nine men would cross the finish line and earn fame, wealth, and glory. For the others, the reward was madness, failure, and death.
In this extraordinary book, Peter Nichols chronicles a contest of the individual against the sea, waged at a time before cell phones, satellite dishes, and electronic positioning systems. A Voyage for Madmen is a tale of sailors driven by their own dreams and demons, of horrific storms in the Southern Ocean, and of those riveting moments when a split-second decision means the difference between life and death.

Maurice Hornocker is recognized worldwide as the first scientist to unravel the secrets of America's most enigmatic predator—the mountain lion. A story of redemption, this book is a memoir about the never-before-told adventures, challenges, and controversies surrounding Hornocker's groundbreaking study of cougars in the remote reaches of the Idaho Primitive Area.North America's biggest cat was once killed for bounty dollars, slaughtered with impunity and driven toward extinction. But today's cat of intrigue, despite our lingering fears and misconceptions, has returned to much of its native range in the western United States and gained respect as a predator integral and necessary to wild ecosystems. This turnaround was triggered by one man: Maurice Hornocker. Cougars on the Cliff recounts the early years of his research when he tracked lions following a dog's nose and footprints in the snow—before telemetry was available. Hornocker was first to learn that mountain lions living in stable populations limit their own numbers through territoriality and a concept he called "mutual avoidance." This insight flew in the face of long-held beliefs that cougars were prolific and wanton killers that needed to be controlled as vermin. Thanks to Hornocker's work, today cougars can be found throughout the West and have even started to reclaim their place in New England.

Updated edition with further insights and honest reports on Gerald's enormous progress in health.
My husband's name is Gerald and he is a collateral damage victim of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, in short, he is floxed! Until a few weeks ago, we had neither heard of the term 'floxed' nor did we know what it means, as in to be affected by severe side effects after taking the aforementioned antibiotics and to therefore become very ill. An almost unbelievable total of 39 side effects affected Gerald or are still affecting him and based on his experiences and subsequent research into his condition, this book is intended to offer both: guidance and for similarly affected people, their relatives and friends. And as a word of caution: please take these antibiotics only after very careful consideration. A note like 'please tell your Doctor or Pharmacist if you suffer from any listed side effects...' is always be included in any medication packages. Unfortunately, though, such references are apparently not taken seriously by the medical profession, nor does any advice or assistance from this side seem to exist as there is no treatment option available. Gerald, therefore, has no other option than to help himself and to share whatever information we have gleaned in this regard with others who may hopefully also benefit thereby. I'm simply going to describe Geralds experiences he went through and explain his different methods (nutritional supplements, medication, and alternatives) he has tried, in order to become human once again. However, Gerald is not a doctor, so this book cannot and must not replace a doctor's consultation, nor should it replace a professional medical diagnosis!

A rip-roaring tour of the cosmos with the Bad Astronomer, revealing the sky as never seen before―from everywhere but Earth.

How would Saturn’s rings look from a spaceship sailing just above them? If you were falling into a black hole, what’s the last thing you’d see before your spaghettification? What would it be like to visit the faraway places we currently experience only through high-powered telescopes and robotic emissaries? Faster-than-light travel may never be invented, but we can still take the scenic route through the universe with renowned astronomer and science communicator Philip Plait.

On this lively, immersive adventure through the cosmos, Plait draws ingeniously on the latest scientific research to transport readers to ten spectacular sites, from our own familiar Moon to the outer reaches of our solar system and far beyond. Whether strolling through a dust storm under Mars’ butterscotch sky, witnessing the birth of a star, or getting dizzy in a technicolor nebula, Plait is an illuminating, entertaining guide to the most otherworldly views in our universe.

    Mismatch - How Inclusion Shapes...

Sometimes designed objects reject their users: a computer mouse that doesn't work for left-handed people, for example, or a touchscreen payment system that only works for people who read English phrases, have 20/20 vision, and use a credit card. These mismatches are the building blocks of exclusion. In Mismatch, Kat Holmes describes how design can lead to exclusion, and how design can also remedy exclusion.Holmes tells stories of pioneers of inclusive design, many of whom were drawn to work on inclusion because of their own experiences of exclusion. A gamer and designer who depends on voice recognition shows Holmes his "Wall of Exclusion", which displays dozens of game controllers that require two hands to operate; an architect shares her firsthand knowledge of how design can fail communities; an astronomer who began to lose her eyesight adapts a technique called "sonification" so she can "listen" to the stars.Designing for inclusion is not a feel-good sideline. Holmes shows how inclusion can be a source of innovation and growth, especially for digital technologies. It can be a catalyst for creativity and a boost for the bottom line as a customer base expands. And each time we remedy a mismatched interaction, we create an opportunity for more people to contribute to society in meaningful ways.Foreword by John Maeda
