  Edgar Allan Poe was one of America’s first native-born professional authors, but he nevertheless embodied the now-common archetype of the artist — dark, tortured, brilliant and tragic. Born into troubled conditions, Poe’s life hardly improved over the years, and when it did, his happiness or triumph was always brief. His work was lauded during his lifetime, but his lifestyle never came close to matching the legacy that would swell in the decades following his death. And that untimely end, so mysterious and pathetic, was an event that only Poe or Fate could have been macabre enough to script. However, in spite of (or perhaps because of) all of his suffering, Poe remains one of the great forces in American literature, particularly during its formative years. He was a pioneer of multiple literary traditions, including the gothic, horror, dark Romanticism, detective, satire, hoax and science fiction genres.  
  	There is no greater accolade for a writer than for their name to become an adjective. For example, any story that deals with a dystopian future is likely to be called “Orwellian” following the success of the novel 1984 by English writer George Orwell. But within the horror genre, Lovecraft’s work, filled with madness and brooding menace and set in a semi-fictional world of his own creation, gave rise to the use of the term “Lovecraftian” to describe similar works. Despite this accolade, however, Lovecraft achieved almost no commercial success and very little recognition during his lifetime. His output also seems disproportionately small compared to his current influence - he never wrote a full-length novel, and most of his fiction took the form of short stories published in various magazines. It was only after his death that his fiction was regarded as more significant than the bulk of horror fiction written in the 1920s and 1930s.

  Peter Freuchen was born on February 2, 1886, in the small town of Nykøbing Falster, Denmark. Raised in a well-off family, his early life was marked by an environment that fostered curiosity and exploration. From a young age, Freuchen exhibited a strong interest in adventure and the natural world. He was inspired by his father, a civil engineer, and his mother, who instilled in him a love for literature and storytelling. These early experiences would play a crucial role in shaping his adventurous spirit and intellectual curiosity, which would define much of his later life. 
  Freuchen's education was broad and varied. Initially attending school in his hometown, he soon showed an aptitude for science and geography. However, his desire to explore the world beyond the classroom eventually led him to study at the University of Copenhagen, where he focused on medicine and natural sciences. Although Freuchen did not complete his medical degree, his time at the university was pivotal in forming his understanding of the natural world and fostering his interest in Arctic exploration. 
  During his student years, Freuchen was drawn to the literature of explorers such as Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen. These accounts of Arctic adventures ignited a deep passion in him to experience such feats firsthand. While still a young man, he decided to leave behind his academic pursuits and embark on an adventure that would change his life forever. At the age of 22, Freuchen sailed to Greenland, where he would spend the next several years of his life living among the Inuit people. It was here that Freuchen learned the skills necessary to survive in one of the harshest environments on Earth. His time in Greenland was not just a physical trial but also an intellectual journey, as he immersed himself in the culture, language, and survival techniques of the Inuit.

  Withdrawn from my previous routines, lifestyle and social activities to focus on caregiving, I feel isolated and disconnected. In my loneliness and desperation, from the bottom of my heart, I cry to the Lord and the Lord answers me saying: "My steadfast love never ceases; my mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is my faithfulness" 
  (Lamentations 3: 22 -23). 
  What a wonderful promise of our Father God! When I am tempted to wallow in the mud of self-pity, I turn my gaze to the Lord. When I become depressed and distressed, I cling to His promise of unceasing love and mercy which are new every morning.
