Summary

This manual treats of the structural designs of musical composition, not of the styles or species of music. It undertakes the thorough explanation of each design or form, from the smallest to the largest; and such comparison as serves to demonstrate the principle of natural evolution, in the operation of which the entire system originates. This explanation—be it well understood—is conducted solely with a view to the Analysis of musical works, and is not calculated to prepare the student for the application of form in practical composition. For the exhaustive exposition of the technical apparatus, the student must be referred to my "Homophonic Forms". The aim is to enable the student to recognize and trace the mental process of the composer in executing his task; to define each factor of the structural design, and its relation to every other factor and to the whole; to determine thus the synthetic meaning of the work, and thereby to increase not only his own appreciation, interest, and enjoyment of the very real beauties of good music, but also his power to interpret, intelligently and adequately, the works that engage his attention. A collection of writings analyzing the controversial 1979 posthumous memoirs of the great Russian composer at their significance.

In 1979, the alleged memoirs of legendary composer Dmitry Shostakovich (1906–1975) were published as Testimony: The Memoirs of Dmitry Shostakovich As Related to and Edited by Solomon Volkov. Since its appearance, however, Testimony has been the focus of controversy in Shostakovich studies as doubts were raised concerning its authenticity and the role of its editor, Volkov, in creating the book.

A Shostakovich Casebook presents twenty-five essays, interviews, newspaper articles, and reviews—many newly available since the collapse of the Soviet Union—that review the “case” of Shostakovich. In addition to authoritatively reassessing Testimony’s genesis and reception, the authors in this book address issues of political influence on musical creativity and the role of the artist within a totalitarian society. Internationally known contributors include Richard Taruskin, Laurel E. Fay, and Irina Antonovna Shostakovich, the composer’s widow. This volume combines a balanced reconsideration of the Testimony controversy with an examination of what the controversy signifies for all music historians, performers, and thoughtful listeners.

    Praise for A Shostakovich Casebook

“A major event . . . This Casebook is not only about Volkov’s Testimony, it is about music old and new in the 20th century, about the cultural legacy of one of that century’s most extravagant social experiments, and what we have to learn from them, not only what they ought to learn from us.” —Caryl Emerson, Princeton University

“An interesting look at how 1977 marked the explosion of punk alongside this heartbreaking (though not altogether surprising) loss of a legend” (USA Today).   In the late 1970s, punk music was setting out to destroy everything Elvis Presley had come to represent. But punk couldn’t destroy The King himself—he had already done that, succumbing to his excesses at Graceland on August 16, 1977.   Ever since, Elvis has permeated the world in ways that are bizarre and inexplicable: a pop icon while alive, he has become almost a religious icon in death, a modern-day martyr crucified on the wheel of drugs, celebrity culture, junk food, and sex. In Elvis Has Left the Building, Dylan Jones takes us back to those heady days around the time of his death and the simultaneous rise of punk. Evoking the hysteria and devotion of The King’s numerous disciples and imitators, Jones offers a uniquely insightful commentary on Elvis’s life, times, and outrageous demise. Recounting how the artist single-handedly changed the course of popular music and culture, he also delves deep into the cult of The King and reveals what Elvis’s death meant—and still means to us today.   “I’m not sure punk would have existed without [Elvis]. In fact I’m not sure a lot of things would have existed without him. Dylan Jones is the right man to ponder such questions.” —Bono   “A gripping tale of impossible success and terrible waste and lost beauty that veers from Memphis to Las Vegas and all the way to the broken backstreets of London.” —Tony Parsons, author of The Hanging Club

Param Pujya Dadashri, the revered scientist of Akram Vignan (the direct path to Self-realization) has explained about mahatmas' (Self-realized followers of Param Pujya Dadashri) puzzles about their worldly interaction, their difficulties in following the Agnas (the five cardinal spiritual instructions given after Self-realization) and about the ways in which they can remain in jagruti (awareness of the Self). Jagruti would include moving from the belief of 'I am Chandu' (reader should use his or her own name), to that of 'I am Shuddhatma (Pure Self) only'; 'I am not the doer'; 'I am only the Gnata-Drashta (Knower-Seer)'. Everything else is simply a discharge, of all that was previously charged. Under no circumstances are new causes being created. What you are 'seeing' is only the effect of past life causes. Compiled in this Audio book is the heart touching speech of Param Pujya Dadashri; wherein he discusses the various methods to remain in jagruti, which is of prime importance to attain salvation. To gain and maintain jagruti, Param Pujya Dadashri has shared his vision of separation from the self, how to be Gnata-Drashta by talking to oneself, sometimes rebuking oneself for having done any wrong, how to understand and apply the concepts of charge-discharge of karmas, etc.
