Sinopsis

“A truly funny sendup of the corrupt politics of academe, the publishing industry and politics, as well as a subtle but biting critique of racial ideology.” —Publishers Weekly

This “hilarious high-concept satire” (Publishers Weekly), by the PEN/Faulkner finalist and acclaimed author of Telephone and Erasure, is a fictitious and satirical chronicle of South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond’s desire to pen a history of African-Americans—his and his aides’ belief being that he has done as much, or more, than any American to shape that history. An epistolary novel, The History follows the letters of loose cannon Congressional office workers, insane interns at a large New York publishing house and disturbed publishing executives, along with homicidal rival editors, kindly family friends, and an aspiring author named Septic. Strom Thurmond appears charming and open, mad and sure of his place in American history.

“Outrageously funny . . . it could become a cult classic.” —Library Journal

“I think Percival Everett is a genius. I’ve been a fan since his first novel . . . He’s a brilliant writer and so damn smart I envy him.” —Terry McMillan, New York Times-bestselling author of It’s Not All Downhill from Here

“God bless Percival Everett, whose dozens of idiosyncratic books demonstrate a majestic indifference to literary trends, the market or his critics.”?The Wall Street Journal

"Sure, I'll Join Your Cult: A Memoir of Mental Illness and the Quest to Belong Anywhere" by Maria Bamford is a candid and humorous exploration of the author's lifelong struggle to find her place in the world. From battling an eating disorder in the 1980s to navigating a career in the arts while dealing with medical debt and psychiatric institutionalization, Bamford has tried various methods to fit in and connect with others. In her unique comedic style, she recounts her experiences in numerous anonymous fellowships, including Debtors Anonymous and Overeaters Anonymous, as well as her hypomanic episodes related to issues like capitalism and workplace health. Through her singular voice, Bamford's memoir delves into the challenges of being a part of society despite not excelling at it, with the aim of turning isolating experiences into relatable comedy without forming a cult following.

BruceG is a Professional Grower in the Kingdom of Aspen trying to complete an environmental plan to protect the aquifer at Justin’s feedlot. But, he is continually thwarted by “systemic discrimination” being practiced by Professional Builders from a “dysfunctional” government regulatory body because they believe only builders can do feedlot plans.
    A ‘turf war” pursues.
Queen Mara, a Political Appointee within the Ministry, takes up the builder’s cause and decrees only builders can do feedlot designs. She threatens closure of Justin’s Better Beef Haven. BruceG fights back and Queen Mara files a complaint against him for challenging her edict and offending her ego.
Now BruceG has to deal with a scarecrow, his own self-regulatory body, the League of Growers, who decides on complaints and can discipline its’ members. The ensuing investigation is fraught with biases contributing to procedural unfairness.
Saving Justin’s feedlot and protecting the aquifer hangs in the air.
The author, Doug Cameron, has worked close-up and “in the face of” various regulatory bodies for over 40 years. He is familiar with their legislated power and the harassment and abuse they can dish out when challenged—all hidden from the public. The lack of an overseer to rein-in scarecrows gone awry is a major issue.
This book uses satire to expose the inner workings, stupidity, biases and unnatural justice used by reg-bodies to protect their own self-interests and/or self-image rather than protect the interests and well-being of the public.

The holidays are always merry, but the mishaps shine bright.

For many families, the holiday season is—quite frankly—unhinged. Whether that involves inappropriately improvised monologues at the children’s Christmas pageant, gifts that land someone in the emergency room, or just sitting through the emotional rollercoaster of a Hallmark movie marathon,
the holidays are a chaotic and magical time. And nobody knows this better than Danny Pellegrino.

For Danny, the holidays are always accompanied by both merriment and mayhem.

And like the gay Ghost of Christmas Past, he’s here to take you on a nostalgic trip through his most festive memories in a collection of stories that are heartfelt, hilarious, and (unfortunately) true.

So grab your favorite winter beverage, snuggle up by the crackling fireplace, and turn up the holiday tunes from the pop diva of your choosing. The Jolliest Bunch is a healthy dose of holiday cheer to prepare you for the frenzied season ahead and remind you of the moments that make all the chaos worth it.

Part catharsis, part diagnosis, this divinely wry collection from New Yorker and McSweeney's satirist Eli Grober will strike a chord with those who are dismayed by the chaos of our times. None of it will help—but a few good laughs won't hurt. Probably.

There's a lot going on, all the time. It may feel overwhelming. Don't worry. It will end. This Won't Help is here for you in the meantime—with 100 short, sharp, satirical essays that skewer a world raging with inaction, while maximizing the profits of self-destruction. As if that would help!

Eli Grober's biting, Swiftian prose spares no one—not the megalomaniacal billionaire fleeing Earth for a better life on unlivable Mars, not an extremely online family living completely off-grid, not even a fossil-fuel lobbyist insisting we all stop using straws. (Eli does spare a kind thought for the supremely intelligent listeners with the good sense to buy this book.) Maybe, just maybe, descending through the inferno of our environmental, economic, and political landscape will help us find real solutions to the hypocrisy and dysfunction that surrounds us. But probably not.
