Summary

A beautifully illustrated account of the letters and correspondence of Jane Austen.
It has been said that Jane Austen the woman and Jane Austen the author are all of a piece, and nowhere is this more evident to the lovers of her novels than in the pages of her letters. This handsome celebration of Austen's letters is illustrated with portraits, facsimile letters, topographical engravings and fashion plates, all helping to bring to life the world Jane Austen inhabited.
The letters, with an accompanying commentary by Penelope Hughes-Hallett, are separated into six periods of Jane Austen's life, between the years 1796, when she was twenty, and 1817, the year of her death. They celebrate Jane Austen's talent for expressing exactly what she perceived, making this an illuminating companion to her novels. Although the book follows a broadly chronological scheme, the letters are arranged round visual themes, including the Hampshire countryside, social life in Bath and London, domestic pursuits, paying visits and travelling by carriage.
The author, who was born in Jane Austen's Hampshire village of Steventon, lectured on English Literature for the Open University and the Oxford University Department of External Studies.

The Classic Case of Alien Abduction Rereleased with a New Afterword for a New GenerationThe Andreasson Affair is more than just a classic example of a close encounter. It is—to use the jargon of ufologists—a case of such "high strangeness" that even the most open-minded investigators were at first inclined to dismiss it out of hand. Yet it has become probably the best documented case of its kind to date, the subject of an intensive twelve-month investigation conducted for the Center for UFO Studies (CUFOS) that involved, among other things, the recording of large quantities of testimony given under hypnosis, extensive lie detector testing of witnesses, detailed analysis of corroborative circumstantial evidence, exhaustive comparison with other such accounts, and much more. The Andreasson Affair includes: the most detailed description of any UFO abduction experience; a supporting foreword to the book by astronomer Dr. J. Allen Hynek; and verification of all events associated with Betty's experience.

Lieutenant Colonel Jay Kopelman won the hearts of readers with his moving story of adopting an abandoned puppy named Lava in a hellish corner of Iraq. For this Marine and his comrades, the puppy served as an important emotional touchstone in a grim and seemingly endless war.Kopelman now writes about what it's like to be home. He credits his canine best friend with finding his wife-in the park, Lava began playing with her dog and the two owners met-and for keeping him sane as he readjusted. With the same intelligence and insight he showed in From Baghdad, With Love, Kopelman sets forth more than a dozen lessons, including: Life can change in an instant, but you'll be able to handle it; passion for something can help you tap into your most powerful reserve of energy; have a standard operating procedure for everything; and never forget who you are or how you got here. Active and retired troops, soldiers' friends and families, and everyone who has ever loved a dog will embrace this book.

An ophthalmologist recounts the lives and experiences of three generations of doctors in America, revealing changes in health care.Dr. Mayo’s Boy chronicles the medical experiences of a family of Texas physicians in small town Waxahachie and big city Dallas. Full of stories that are often heartening in their humanity and sometimes disturbing in what they reveal about contemporary health care, this book explores how physicians have viewed their commitment to their patients, how they sacrificed to meet the challenges they face, and how the practice of medicine has changed over almost sixty years. While Dr. Mayo’s Boy is by no means a policy statement, it does offer a nostalgic but clear-eyed look at the past and, through its tales of three doctors’ lives, asks implicit questions about how we “manage” health care today. There must remain one constant—the need for a patient to know that their doctor cares about them as an individual.Praise for Dr. Mayo’s Boy“An extraordinary book. Rob Tenery traces the evolution of health care in this country and show how much medicine has gained—and lost—in the past hundred years. In a highly entertaining and eloquent way, Dr. Tenery makes a plea for medicine to return to its roots as a healing profession rather than as a business. Highly recommended!” —Dean Ornish, MD, founder and president of the Preventative Medicine Research Institute, University of California, San Francisco

To everyone else, John F. Kennedy, Jr., may have been American royalty, but to RoseMarie Terenzio he was an entitled nuisance-and she wasn't afraid to let him know it. RoseMarie was his personal assistant, his publicist, and one of his closest confidantes during the last five years of his life. In this, her first memoir, she bravely recounts her own Fairy Tale Interrupted, describing the unlikely friendship between a blue-collar girl from the Bronx and John F. Kennedy, Jr.Funny, moving, and fresh, her memoir is a unique account by the woman who was with him through dating, politics, the paparazzi, and his marriage to Carolyn Bessette. Her street smarts, paired with her loyalty, candor, and relentless work ethic, made her the trusted insider to America's most famous man. After John and Carolyn's tragic, untimely deaths on July 16, 1999, RoseMarie's whole world came crashing down around her, along with her hopes for the future. Only now does she feel she can tell her story in a book that is at once a moving tribute and a very real picture of her friend and employer. Many books have sought to capture John F. Kennedy, Jr.'s life. None has been as intimate or as honest as Fairy Tale Interrupted, a true portrait of the man behind the icon-patient, protective, surprisingly goofy, occasionally thoughtless and self-involved, yet capable of extraordinary generosity and kindness. Terenzio reveals what John really had in mind for his political future, how he handled media attention, and the reality of life behind the scenes at George magazine. She also shares how she dealt with the ultra-secretive planning of John and Carolyn's wedding on Cumberland Island-and the heartbreak of their deaths.Fairy Tale Interrupted is a deeply loving story and a fascinating adventure, filled with warmth, humor, insight, and five years' worth of unforgettable memories.

Orde Wingate - A Man of Genius...

“A superb biography” of the controversial British Army officer who lead the 77th Indian Infantry Brigade against the Japanese in Burma during World War II (HistoryOfWar.org). Winston Churchill described Wingate as a man of genius who might well have become a man of destiny. Tragically, he died in a jungle aircraft crash in 1944. Like his famous kinsman Lawrence of Arabia, Wingate was renowned for being an unorthodox soldier, inclined to reject received patterns of military thought. He was a fundamentalist Christian with a biblical certainty in himself and his mission. He is best-remembered as the charismatic and abrasive leader of the Chindits. With the support of Archibald Wavell, he was responsible for a strategy of using independent groups deep behind enemy lines, supported only by air drops. Wingate was responsible for leading the charge of 2,000 Ethiopians and the Sudan Defence Force into Italian-occupied Abyssinia. Remarkably, he defeated a 40,000 strong enemy that was supported by aircraft and artillery, which Wingate did not possess. Despite his achievements, Wingate suffered from illness and depression and in Cairo attempted suicide. He was not universally liked: his romantic Zionism contrasted with the traditional British Arabist notions. He did, however, lead from the front and marched, ate and slept with his men. In this authoritative biography, Royle expertly brings to life a ruthless, complex, arrogant but ultimately admirable general.“An insightful look at the controversies which have dogged Wingate’s reputation over the years . . . strongly recommended to anyone interested in irregular warfare and counterinsurgency operations.” —African Armed Forces Journal

For Judy Lipson, her sisters were her compass, constant, champions, and competitors and for thirty years she suppressed the grief of losing her two beloved sisters.

Judy lost her younger sister Jane at age twenty-two in an automobile accident and nine years later her older sister Margie at age thirty-five to a twenty-year battle with anorexia and bulimia. It was not until 2011 that Judy began her journey to mourn for Margie and Jane.

Judy experienced the reality that those who lose siblings are the forgotten mourners and they are left to take care of their parents and children. The impact of their loss takes a back seat.

Through her participation and work prescribed in a complicated grief study, Judy learned to restore her well-being, happy memories of her sisters, and the passion the three of them had for figure skating. By bringing her sisters and their memories together more present in her life, Judy found peace.

To honor the memory of her sisters, Judy created and continues to hold, Celebration of Sisters, an annual ice skating fundraiser which benefits Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

This is the story of how Judy used her memories and their shared love of ice skating to come full circle. When she performs on the ice, Judy feels Margie and Jane on each shoulder guiding her and whispering in her ear, "Judy, you've got this."

This is a story of love, grief, and moving forward, even years after the loss.
