  The novel Unterstadt tells the story of an urban family of German origin living in Osijek from the end of the nineteenth till the end of the twentieth century. It is narrated through the portrayal of the destinies of four generations of women – a great grandmother, a grandmother, mother, and a daughter – their shattered illusions, the education of their children, the historical events that brutally lash out at them.
   
  Ivana Šojat creates a world rich in detail and nuance, all her characters, both major and minor, are expressive and suggestive, abundant in virtues and flaws, complex and multidimensional, as life itself is. By depicting a clash of generations through the female characters of a family, the author creates a world in which, often due to bizarre strokes of fate or wrongly selected life-cards, both horrible and beautiful events occur. Yet the central theme, running through all the generations and all the characters, is that of hiding away from the past, fleeing from it, concealing it, which sooner or later leads to traumas and misunderstandings.
   
  Unterstadt is a book about a family and a town, written in the manner of the best and greatest modernist novels. Through the history of one family, it speaks of the twentieth century in a multiethnic town, of dictatorships, of wrongly selected sides, of fate which one can hardly defy.Unterstadt reveals the richness of Ivana Šojat’s narrative talent, and it is thus not surprising that she has emerged as one of the most interesting writers of contemporary Croatian prose.

  Ramblings of a Free Man

  Perhaps all lives start as a well-constructed novel. A series of vignettes follow, some comedic, some mired in tragedy. Sometimes we try to shape our destiny, other times it shapes us.
   
  Suddenly in the blink of an eye, we enter the final run-in. For me, this late 
  freedom is best served by poetry, life’s essence distilled. Holding close to family and friends and showing kindness to strangers and those in need.
   
  Observing at leisure the many human aspects of Britain, Europe and latterly India has sparked a rekindling of the freedoms and insights that can come with age. The many experiences we have stored away in our busy lives can come tumbling out.
   
  Appealing to all ages, anyone who has marvelled at the depth, complexity 
  commonality and diversity of our fellow humans can accompany me on this 
  journey.

  A phone call can change a life. A phone call to Nick, telling him of her mother’s illness, unites them in a gathering that brings comfort and intrigue.However, their emotional reunion is short lived as Wendy’s mother suffers another heart attack and dies. Alejandro arrives from Spain. Having recently found Wendy he is not about to let her go. He comforts her through her pain and shields her from the unwanted attention of her boss. Then her new found father gets a devastating phone call of his own. His wife has had a stroke and he must go to her. Wendy must cope with being abandoned again.Wendy and Nick are reunited at another funeral. Wendy supports her father and meets her half brother. Further revelations and erupting emotions follow, but this time they must remain secret forever.

  This slow-burn, strangers-to-enemies-to-lovers, contemporary romance is a standalone filled with angst, battling the demons of the past, and finding peace. Each book contains a story about a different couple. No cheating. No cliffhangers. HEA.
