Sinopse

In "Pictures of Hellas: Five Tales of Ancient Greece," Peder Mariager invites readers on a captivating journey through the rich tapestry of ancient Greek life, blending narrative storytelling with historical insight. Each of the five tales serves as a vivid tableau, illuminating distinct facets of Greek culture, mythology, and philosophical thought, showcasing Mariager's meticulous attention to historical detail and his lyrical prose style akin to classic epic storytelling. The book elegantly weaves together elements of tragedy, comedy, and moral inquiry, echoing the literary traditions of Homer and Sophocles, while also reflecting contemporary themes that resonate with modern sensibilities. Peder Mariager, a distinguished scholar of ancient history and literature, draws upon his extensive academic background to breathe life into the characters and settings of ancient Greece. His passion for Hellenic studies, forged through years of research and travel across the Greek landscapes, deeply informs the authenticity woven throughout these tales. Mariager's multifaceted understanding of Greek society allows him to present not just stories, but immersion into the philosophical and existential questions faced by individuals in that time. For readers eager to explore the enduring legacy of ancient Greece, "Pictures of Hellas" offers an accessible yet profound experience. Mariager's storytelling is not only informative but incredibly engaging, making this book a must-read for anyone interested in classic literature, history, and the timeless themes of humanity.

Despite fighting in North Africa and the Atlantic, the United States still had the resources and manpower to fight the Japanese in the Pacific. Though the Japanese had crippled the American fleet at Pearl Harbor, its distance from Japan made an invasion of Pearl Harbor impossible, and Japan had not severely damaged important infrastructure. Thus, the United States was able to quickly rebuild a fleet, still stationed at Pearl Harbor right in the heart of the Pacific. This forward location allowed the United States to immediately push deeply into the Pacific theater.
The Americans would eventually push the Japanese back across the Pacific, and one of the most instrumental leaders in the effort was Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who commanded the U.S. Pacific Fleet and helped coordinate joint operations with the legendary General Douglas MacArthur, the Supreme Commander, Southwest Pacific Area.
Today, Nimitz’s name doesn’t ring as many bells as his counterpart’s, because of all the military men America produced during the 19th and 20th centuries, it’s hard to find one as important, successful, and controversial as General MacArthur. The son of a Civil War veteran, MacArthur rose to become the most instrumental commander in the Pacific Theater during World War II. His legendary return to the Philippines in 1944 made good on one of the war’s most famous vows, and it was MacArthur who fittingly oversaw the occupation and reconstruction of Japan following the war.
Given his long and celebrated career, MacArthur was the obvious choice to lead the newly created United Nations’ troops during the Korean War, but his arguments over war strategy and policy eventually led to his controversial firing by President Harry Truman in 1951. After that, in his own words, he “faded away,” living out his remaining days on the top floor of the Waldorf Hotel until his death in 1964.

Do intrusive thoughts stifle your days?
Are you overwhelmed and paralysed by constant doubts?
Are anxiety and depression preventing you from living the life you want?

Anger, fear, sadness and shame are notoriously difficult emotions to manage, because nature has forged their purpose purely to protect us. Sometimes trauma can interfere with your ability to regulate your emotions, amplifying them and generating devastating effects for you and others.
It is very difficult to ignore these emotions. Sometimes they get in the way, impede your progress and make an intimate relationship or career advancement impossible. Although we can't control many of the things that happen to us, we can certainly control how we react to those things.

From this book you will learn:How CBT works. How mental patterns are established and vicious circles are blocked. What emotional levers are, and how to react to them.To eliminate anxiety, depression and panic attacks. How to set goals and begin to use CBT.Basic and advanced techniques of CBT.How to challenge (and beat) negative and automatic thoughts. How to prevent relapses.

CBT has incredible benefits, and perhaps the most encouraging aspect is that you do not need to spend anything on drugs and therapists, both of which can be an impediment to your progress.

This book will most likely not be the ‘complete cure’ for all your problems. HOWEVER, I GUARANTEE that if you read and re-read every single chapter carefully, ABSORB all the advice and APPLY the techniques provided by this manual, you will immediately experience a feeling of relief, and you will see significant improvements and progress in every aspect of your life.
