Sinopsis

The events of Of People and Things behind him, Paul begins to write again. Part journal and part imagination, he tries to wrestle new events into stories to make sense of it all.

They seem friendly enough, but what do they want from him? If only Mr Samuels – the kindly, enigmatic private detective who had saved Paul before – were on hand to sort things out, but he is nowhere to be seen. Comedian and New York Times bestseller Jenny Slate’s wild, hilarious, genre-bending essays read in her singular voice depict life and motherhood as you’ve never seen it before. Featuring narration from friends Vanessa Bayer and Will Forte (“Schumacher 2”), and George Saunders (“The Therapist”).   What happened was this: Jenny Slate was a human mammal who sniffed the air every morning hoping to find another person to love who would love her, and in that period there was a deep dark loneliness that she had to face and befriend, and then we are pleased to report that she did fall in love, and in that period she was like chimes, or a flock of clean breaths, and her spine lying flat was the many-colored planks on the xylophone, but also she was rabid with fear of losing this love, because of past injury. And then what happened was that she became a wild-pregnant-mammal-thing and then she exploded herself by having a whole baby blast through her vagina during a global plague and then she was expected to carry on like everything was normal—but was this normal, and had she or anything ever been normal? Herein lies an account of this journey, told in five phases—Single, True Love, Pregnancy, Baby, and Ongoing—through luminous, laugh-out-loud funny, unclassifiable essays that take the form of letters to a doctor, dreams of a stork, fantasy therapy sessions, gossip between racoons, excerpts from an imaginary olden timey play, obituaries, theories about post-partum hair loss, graduation speeches, and more. No one writes like Jenny Slate.

A witty, absurdist satire of the last 500 years, Alexandra Petri's US History is the fake textbook you never knew you needed!

Alexandra Petri's US History contains a lost (invented!) history of America. (A history for people disappointed that the only president whose weird sex letters we have is Warren G. Harding.) Petri's "historical fan fiction" draws on real events and completely absurd fabrications to create a laugh-out-loud, irreverent takedown of our nation's complicated past.

On Petri's deranged timeline, John and Abigail Adams try sexting, the March sisters from Little Women are sixty feet tall, and Susan Sontag goes to summer camp. Nearly eighty short, hilarious pieces span centuries of American history and culture. Nikola Tesla's friends stage an intervention when he falls in love with a pigeon. The characters from Sesame Street invade Normandy. And Mark Twain—who famously said reports of his death had been greatly exaggerated—offers a detailed account of his undeath, in which he becomes a zombie.

This side-splitting work of historical humor shows why Alexandra Petri has been hailed as a "genius," a "national treasure," and "one of the funniest writers alive."

Instead, she's planning an abortion and filing for divorce. Zoe wants to understand why her plans failed—and to move on, have sex, and date while there's still time. As she navigates dysfunctional penises, a paucity of grammatically sound online-dating profiles, and her paralyzing fear of aging alone, she also grapples with the pressure women feel to put others first. Ultimately, Zoe's family, friends, incomparable therapist, and diary of never-to-be-sent letters to her first loves, and the rock band U2, help her learn to let go—of society's constructs of female happiness, and of her own.

“Extraordinary . . . [Bolaño’s] greatest work.” —James Wood, The New York Times The book that catapulted Roberto Bolaño into international literary stardom, By Night in Chile is the final testimony of Sebastián Urrutia Lacroix—Chilean priest and member of Opus Dei, eminent literary critic and failed poet—as he is haunted by a shadowy figure from his past. In Urrutia’s feverish last hours, a deluge of memories pours from him: of hobnobbing with Santiago’s most unctuous literati; of undertaking a mission to save Europe’s decaying cathedrals from existential threat by pigeon excrement; of retreating into Greco-Roman poetry during the darkest chapter of modern Chilean history; of tutoring Augusto Pinochet in Marxist theory, so that the General may better understand his enemies. Throughout he insists, with fracturing conviction, that he was always on the right side of history. A novel about high art and fascism, silence and complicity, and, ultimately, the weight of damnation, Roberto Bolaño’s By Night in Chile is a deep-cutting satire and a work of devastating moral insight.A Macmillan Audio production from Farrar, Straus and Giroux
