Sinopsis

A Lancashire social worker’s latest case involves sex trafficking and the apocalypse in this supernatural crime thriller.

Two fourteen-year-old girls are found wandering Aitken Wood on the slopes of Pendle Hill, claiming to have been raped by a gang of men. With no female social workers available, Johnny Malkin is assigned to their case. But what, at first, looks like yet another incident of child exploitation takes a sinister turn when the girls start speaking of a forthcoming apocalypse.

When Johnny interviews one of the girls, Jenna Dunham, her story starts to unravel. His investigation draws him into a tight-knit village community in the shadow of Pendle Hill, where whispers of witchcraft and child abuse go back to the Middle Ages.

One name recurs, The Hobbledy Man. Is he responsible for the outbreaks of violence sweeping across the country? Is he more than just myth?

A novel of a mysterious castle, unknown treasure, romance, and duplicity from the Victorian-era author of Lilith. “One of MacDonald’s very best.”—Richard Reis, author of George MacDonald’s Fiction This dark realistic novel is somewhat puzzling in MacDonald’s corpus of more uplifting works. Some of its disconcerting themes grew out of George and Louisa MacDonald’s friendship with author John Ruskin during a troubled time in the latter’s life. Some of the descriptive portions contained within this narrative, especially of the Swiss Alps, are among MacDonald’s finest. As Michael Phillips writes in the introduction, “Though the novel draws vividly on imagery from MacDonald’s trip to Switzerland in 1865, and contains passages of great narrative power, it is also of interest for characterizations thought by some to have emerged out of the circumstances of Ruskin’s involvement with Rose La Touche. As a result, commentators and analysts through the years have read into the work all manner of Freudian, Jungian, and sexual themes. Readers, of course, will see in it what they choose to see.”

Poe’s stature as a major figure in world literature is based on his ingenious and profound poems, which established a highly influential rationale for the short form in poetry. Poe was also the principal forerunner of the “art for art’s sake” movement in 19th-century literature. He demonstrated a brilliant command of language and technique as well as an inspired and original imagination. Poe’s poetry greatly influenced the French Symbolists of the late 19th century, who in turn altered the direction of modern literature. Here, perhaps, is his most icon lauded work as interpreted by veteran actor Giuliano. An outlandishly funny, unambiguously bloody novel about fame, love, religion, politics, and appetite

It is one thing to die, alone and confused, trapped with your pants down around your ankles in the filthiest bus restroom in existence. It’s quite another thing to wake up during the autopsy, attack the coroner, and flee into the wintry streets of Toronto.

It’s not like Sheldon Funk didn’t have enough on his plate. His last audition, for the reality television series House Bingo, had gone disastrously wrong. His mother was in the late stages of dementia. His savings were depleted, his agent couldn’t care less, and his boyfriend was little more than a nice set of abs. Now, Sheldon also has to contend with decomposition, the scent of the open grave, and an unending appetite for human flesh. Plus another audition in the morning.

For Sheldon to survive his death without literally falling apart at the seams, he has to find a way to balance family, career, and cannibalism, which would be a lot easier if he could stop eating hoboes. Husk, the story of the everyzombie.

The Willows is one of Blackwood's best-known works and has been influential on a number of later writers. Horror author H. P. Lovecraft considered it to be the finest supernatural tale in English literature. The work is an example of early modern horror and is connected within the literary tradition of weird fiction. Two friends are midway on a canoe trip down the Danube River. Throughout the story, Blackwood personifies the surrounding environment - river, sun, wind - and imbues them with a powerful and ultimately threatening character. Most ominous are the masses of dense, desultory, menacing willows, which "moved of their own will as though alive, and they touched, by some incalculable method, my own keen sense of the horrible." This is just the start of a terrifyingly satisfying listening experience!
