Sinopsis

In the wake of the 2020 Presidential Election, it seems to have become “politically incorrect” to raise questions about election integrity. This is unfortunate, as it is fundamental to our democracy that legitimate concerns about mail-in voting processes or other issues of trust be voiced and debated. This book meticulously documents the extraordinary saga of mail-in voting in Pennsylvania’s 2020 Presidential Election, highlighting some worrisome aspects. Though Donald Trump had won this pivotal state in a close contest against Hilary Clinton in 2016, the state flipped back to the Democrats in 2020 in an election distinguished by the introduction of no-excuse mail-in voting. Quantitative analysis is a core component of the discussion—a multifaceted exploration of mail-in voting patterns. The quantitative discussion is merged with an examination of contextual and circumstantial details. The kinds of irregularities that “no-excuse” mail-in voting may facilitate are considered as well. The data exploration reveals a remarkable landscape — a poorly illuminated space from which arose odd statistical phenomena — a twilight zone, of sorts. These puzzling phenomena are consistent with hypothetical cyber breach or election misconduct scenarios, although there is no direct evidence of a compromised election. For instance, a surprisingly large percentage of Pennsylvania mail-in ballots requested by and sent to Republican voters for the 2020 election were never returned and tallied.Multiple technical mishaps tied to the state’s obsolete and error-prone database management systems made the landscape yet more murky. Sly legal maneuvering (lawfare) by the Democratic party, seeking partisan advantages going into the election, cast an additional shadow over the process. The book concludes with a discussion of what can be done to develop more secure and trustworthy mail-in voting processes. Pennsylvania’s experience and the lessons we can draw from it should be of interest to any citizen concerned about election integrity and credibility and ways to bolster these going forward.

An analysis of the US prison system through real-life stories, and a look at the complex work of community-based social justice projects.

Through the stories of prisoners and their families, including her own family's experiences, Maya Schenwar shows how the institution that locks up 2.3 million Americans and decimates poor communities of color is shredding the ties that, if nurtured, could foster real collective safety. As she vividly depicts here, incarceration takes away the very things that might enable people to build better lives. But looking toward a future beyond imprisonment, Schenwar profiles community-based initiatives that successfully deal with problems—both individual harm and larger social wrongs—through connection rather than isolation, moving toward a safer, freer future for all of us.

"Maya Schenwar's stories about prisoners, their families (including her own), and the thoroughly broken punishment system are rescued from any pessimism such narratives might inspire by the author's brilliant juxtaposition of abolitionist imaginaries and radical political practices." —Angela Y. Davis, author of Are Prisons Obsolete?

From the creator of “a unified field theory of racism” (NPR’s Planet Money), a dollars-and-cents reckoning of the state of Black America and a new framework to close the power gap Historically, Black Americans’ quest for power has been understood as an attempt to gain equal protections under the law. But power in America requires more than basic democratic freedoms. It is inextricably linked with economic influence and ownership—of one’s self, home, business, and creations. Andre M. Perry draws on extensive research and analysis to quantify how much power Black Americans actually have. Ranging from property, business, and wealth to education, health, and social mobility, Black Power Scorecard moves across the country, evaluating people’s ability to set the rules of the game and calculating how that translates into the ultimate means of power—life itself, and the longevity of Black communities. Along the way, Perry identifies woefully overlooked areas of investment that could close the racial gap and benefit everyone. An expansive take on power supported by documentation and data, Black Power Scorecard is a fresh contribution to the country’s reckoning with structural inequality, one that offers a new approach to redressing it.A Macmillan Audio production from Metropolitan Books.

How to harness capitalism's dynamism to create an economy that promotes well-being and rewards creationThe recent economic crisis was a dramatic reminder that capitalism can both produce and destroy. It's a system that by its very nature encourages predators and creators, locusts and bees. But, as Geoff Mulgan argues in this compelling, imaginative, and important book, the economic crisis also presents a historic opportunity to choose a radically different future for capitalism, one that maximizes its creative power and minimizes its destructive force. In an engaging and wide-ranging argument, Mulgan digs into the history of capitalism across the world to show its animating ideas, its utopias and dystopias, as well as its contradictions and possibilities. Drawing on a subtle framework for understanding systemic change, he shows how new political settlements reshaped capitalism in the past and are likely to do so in the future. By reconnecting value to real-life ideas of growth, he argues, efficiency and entrepreneurship can be harnessed to promote better lives and relationships rather than just a growth in the quantity of material consumption. Healthcare, education, and green industries are already becoming dominant sectors in the wealthier economies, and the fields of social innovation, enterprise, and investment are rapidly moving into the mainstream—all indicators of how capital could be made more of a servant and less a master. This is a book for anyone who wonders where capitalism might be heading next—and who wants to help make sure that its future avoids the mistakes of the past. This edition of The Locust and the Bee includes a new afterword in which the author lays out some of the key challenges facing capitalism in the twenty-first century.
