A study of the US National Park Service’s efforts to allow for as many visitors as possible in the parks that are kept in as natural a state as possible.“Yosemite Valley in July of 1967 would have had to be seen to be believed. There was never an empty campsite in the valley; you had to create a space for yourself in a sea of cars, tents, and humanity. . . . The camp next to ours had fifty people in it, with rugs hung between the trees, incense burning, and a stereo set going full volume.”Scenes such as this will probably never be repeated in Yosemite or any other national park, yet the urgent problem remains of balancing the public's desire to visit the parks with the parks’ need to be protected from too many people and cars and too much development. In this book, longtime park visitor and professional geographer Bob O’Brien explores the National Park Service’s attempt to achieve “sustainability,” a balance that allows as many people as possible to visit a park that is kept in as natural a state as possible.O’Brien details methods the NPS has used to walk the line between those who would preserve vast tracts of land for “no use” and those who would tap the Yellowstone geysers to generate electricity. His case studies of six western “crown jewel” parks show how rangers and other NPS employees are coping with issues that impact these cherished public landscapes, including visitation, development, and recreational use.

Your buddy is planning a trip to England; his salary is likewise in rubles, and the national currency in England is the pound sterling.

    What will your pal do?

Of course, he'll go to a currency exchange to convert his hard-earned rubles into British pounds.

Your mum planned to go to Norway to see a friend. What is the current Norwegian currency? The Norwegian Krone Mom's pension is in Russian rubles...
Mom's behavior is predictable: she will travel to an exchange office to exchange her hard-earned rubles for Norwegian krone.
However, there was no crown at this exchange office since they did not deliver for some reason.
Then your mother was offered to purchase American cash - dollars rather than Norwegian kroner. Mom is perplexed: "I have bucks, but I don't want to travel to America for the promenade, but to my buddy in Norway!" And they explain to her: It's nothing - you'll exchange your dollars for Norwegian krone at the exchange office in Norway and enjoy life much more...

And, although your uncle did not travel anywhere he did not plan to, he has additional money.
So, my uncle predicted that the Swiss franc would rise against the ruble, so he went to the exchange office and simply exchanged Swiss francs for rubles, hoping that the rate would rise and his ruble savings would rise as well. Uncle, in other words, opted to speculate on the currency differential.

Time moves forward, not backward-everyone knows you can't unscramble an egg. In the hands of one of today's hottest young physicists, that simple fact of breakfast becomes a doorway to understanding the Big Bang, the universe, and other universes, too. In From Eternity to Here, Sean Carroll argues that the arrow of time, pointing resolutely from the past to the future, owes its existence to conditions before the Big Bang itself-a period of modern cosmology of which Einstein never dreamed. Increasingly, though, physicists are going out into realms that make the theory of relativity seem like child's play. Carroll's scenario is not only elegant, it's laid out in the same easy-to-understand language that has made his group blog, Cosmic Variance, the most popular physics blog on the Net.From Eternity to Here uses ideas at the cutting edge of theoretical physics to explore how properties of space-time before the Big Bang can explain the flow of time we experience in our everyday lives. Carroll suggests that we live in a baby universe, part of a large family of universes in which many of our siblings experience an arrow of time running in the opposite direction. It's an ambitious, fascinating picture of the universe on an ultra-large scale, one that will captivate fans of popular physics blockbusters like Elegant Universe and A Brief History of Time.

The eminent China scholar delivers a landmark study of Chinese culture’s relationship to the natural environment across thousands of years of history. Spanning the three millennia for which there are written records, The Retreat of the Elephants is the first comprehensive environmental history of China. It is also a treasure trove of literary, political, aesthetic, scientific, and religious sources, which allow the reader direct access to the views and feelings of Chinese people toward their environment and their landscape. China scholar and historian Mark Elvin chronicles the spread of the Chinese style of farming that eliminated elephant habitats; the destruction of most of the forests; the impacts of war on the landscape; and the re-engineering of the countryside through gigantic water-control systems. He documents the histories of three contrasting localities within China to show how ecological dynamics defined the lives of the inhabitants. And he shows that China in the eighteenth century was probably more environmentally degraded than northwestern Europe around this time. Indispensable for its new perspective on long-term Chinese history and its explanation of the roots of China’s present-day environmental crisis, this book opens a door into the Chinese past.
