Beschreibung

In "Cosmopolis — Complete," Paul Bourget navigates the complex interplay of modernity and identity, capturing the essence of urban life in the early 20th century. This work employs a stream-of-consciousness literary style, blending psychological depth with vivid realism, which portrays the lives and dilemmas of its characters navigating the intricacies of a rapidly changing society. Bourget's keen observations on the cultural dynamics of Paris serve as a microcosm for the existential crises spurred by industrialization and globalization, offering a profound inquiry into the effects of cosmopolitanism on individual psyche and moral values. Paul Bourget, a prominent figure in French literature, was influenced by his background in philosophy and his keen interest in psychological nuance. Born in 1852, he was attuned to the socio-political shifts of his time, which deeply informed his writing. His commitment to exploring the intersection of personal struggle and societal expectations is evident in this work, revealing the tensions faced by individuals caught between tradition and modernity, fictionalized through richly drawn characters that reflect Bourget's own experiences and observations. A Spanish woman trying to retire as an assassin, a French Foreign Legion deserter from Madagascar, a mysterious (perhaps CIA) woman from America, a billionaire military contractor, and a man wandering the seas alone on a sailing ship bump into each other in the Indian Ocean, and not all of them survive.

Mónica has had enough of her life as a contract killer when she meets lonely wanderer Frank Baltimore in a stupidly expensive resort in Madagascar. A few hundred miles away, Alain has had more than enough of his solitary post on a tiny island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and so when the mysterious Skye offers him a job, he says yes—he doesn't know if she is CIA, Wagner, Darkwater, or a gangster, but he wants in. She takes him to Diego Garcia, the top-secret United States military base in the middle of the Indian Ocean, for training. Things turn ugly and deadly when a man from Frank's past turns up trying to break into the lucrative, secretive, already crowded world of paramilitary contractors. He, Monica, Alain, and Skye end up on his bad side and turn to each other for help.

In Old Age by Anton Chekhov we have the theme of change, loss, renewal, memories, guilt and despair. Taken from his The Complete Stories collection the story is narrated in the third person by an unnamed narrator and very early on in the story the reader realises that Chekhov may be exploring the theme of change. Since Uzelkov has returned to his hometown he cannot imagine the differences the town has undertaken. It is not the place that he has left and there is a sense of modernity. Even the old waiter cannot remember the parts of the town that Uzelkov can. What is also interesting about the town is that Uzelkov has many memories there. Including marrying and divorcing his first wife there. But this seems like a distant memory and only Shapkin can recall the marriage and the divorce. For he was responsible for the legal case and was paid handsomely for his duties.
Over all Old Age is sad tale that lets the reader know that despite the passing of time, time is not a great healer and that the only real winner is Shapkin.

Amos Well drew his huge Bowie knife. The knife's edge glistened against the rays of the sun. He then cut a fine incision through one of Haynes' arms. Haynes screamed as the blade cut through his flesh. Blood spurted out of the wound. Well's knife was drenched in blood now, but he would not cut anymore.
"There! That blood should attract some vultures or other vermin. Should add to your agony as well." he said.
"You're one sick bastard!" Haynes said.
"I'll take that as a compliment!" Kid Cruel said.
