Summary

Drawing on his twenty-four years' experience, Patrick Cozier reflects on the reality of school leadership in Calm Leadership, providing a candid and personal account of his journey. Patrick first stepped into headship in 2006, one of the few Black school leaders in the UK at the time. Over the next two decades, he learned to lead through the highs and lows of the role, from navigating imposter syndrome and everyday pressures to experiencing moments of joy and hard-won progress and to do so calmly.
At the heart of this book is Patrick's 'CALM' leadership model, honed and crafted by him over many years, which entails:

- Confronting uncalm feelings
- Adapting to the feeling of leadership
- Leading people with humanity and understanding
- Maturing into the leader you are meant to be
This model offers a framework for managing stress, staying well and maintaining a positive outlook so that readers can sustain leadership roles in the long term.  This book addresses a part of leadership that's often overlooked: what it actually feels like to lead.
The central message of this book is that leadership doesn't have to be a burnout job; it can be a source of joy, fulfilment and lasting impact when approached with the right mindset and strategies, which Patrick presents with clarity, passion and heart.
Essential for current and aspiring school leaders at all levels.
Available since: 11/28/2025.

If you've experienced profound loss, you may feel numb, disoriented, or despondent. The last thing you want to hear is that "time heals all wounds." It sounds like an empty promise—one that negates the importance of what has passed. The truth is that you may never fully heal—and that is okay. You can still go on to live a rich, meaningful, and vibrant life. This gentle guide will help you transform the overwhelming sadness of grief into validation, hope, and personal growth.

In this book, psychotherapist and death doula Alex Mammadyarov presents a step-by-step, comprehensive, and transformative process to help you cultivate present moment awareness, resilience, and self-compassion after the life-altering shock of a significant loss. You'll learn to ride the ebbs and flows of grief that rear up in the midst of painful anniversaries and events—so you can navigate your new reality, relieve suffering, and grow. It had taken about 40 years for Chicago to grow from a small settlement of about 300 people into a thriving metropolis with a population of 300,000, but in just two days in 1871, much of that progress was burned to the ground. In arguably the most famous fire in American history, a blaze in the southwestern section of Chicago began to burn out of control on the night of October 8, 1871.
In 2005, the world watched in horror as Hurricane Katrina decimated New Orleans, and the calamity seemed all the worse because many felt that technology had advanced far enough to prevent such tragedies, whether through advanced warning or engineering. However, the failure of human engineering like that seen in New Orleans was nothing new, and it had previously had even deadlier consequences in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Although floods rarely get as much coverage as other kinds of natural disasters like volcanic explosions, the Johnstown Flood of 1889 has remained an exception due to the sheer destruction and magnitude of the disaster.
As bad as Hurricane Katrina was, the hurricane that struck Galveston, Texas on September 8, 1900 killed several times more people, with an estimated death toll between 6,000-12,000 people. Prior to advanced communications, few people knew about impending hurricanes except those closest to the site, and in the days before television, or even radio, catastrophic descriptions were merely recorded on paper, limiting an understanding of the immediate impact.
On April 18, 1906, most of the residents of the city of San Francisco were sound asleep when the ground started to shake around 5:15 a.m., but what started as fairly soft tremors turned into a violent shaking in all directions. The earthquake lasted about a minute, but it had enough destructive force to divert the course of entire rivers and level much of the 9th largest city in America at the time.
