Summary

Now that lighthouse automation has been completed, what of the service and dedication to duty that was unfailingly provided by keepers, their associates and their families?

Last of the Line is an account of four generations of lightkeepers, the first being John Hall, the author's great-great-grandfather, who was born in 1810. The memories of Harold Hall, the author's father, are recounted in great detail, including his childhood at Coquet Lighthouse during the First World War.

Harold's records have allowed the author to provide a fascinating account of life in the service of Trinity House. It can be read how, in the post of Supernumerary Assistant Keeper for six years, Harold rarely spent more than four weeks at any lighthouse. However, once promoted to Assistant Keeper at South Bishop Lighthouse, he found some permanence, including a wife!

Patricia also relates her own rich experiences of life as a lightkeeper's daughter, including her very early childhood at St. Mary's Lighthouse during the Second World War before Harold's transfer to the rock lighthouse of Beachy Head. The end result is a captivating story of the Hall, Knott and Darling families and their connections by marriage - the well-known Grace Darling being the author's great-great-great-aunt!

Discover why St. Thérèse of Lisieux is, in the words of Pope Pius X, the “greatest saint of modern times.”When Thérèse Martin died not yet twenty five-years old in the small town of Lisieux, no one could have predicted that the Catholic Church would honor her as a saint and Doctor of the Church. Having lived a modest, secluded life, Thérèse thought of herself merely as a “grain of sand” and called herself the Little Flower. Despite her obscurity during her lifetime, however, her posthumously published autobiography, The Story of a Soul, became a modern spiritual classic and continues to touch the hearts of the faithful worldwide. Join Carmelite spirituality expert Dr. Keith Egan in exploring the life, works, and legacy of this inspiring saint. These lectures provide invaluable insight into her life and writings. Whether new to or familiar with St. Thérèse, you will be inspired to read her words afresh, discovering layers of meaning within seemingly simple statements.Thérèse's “Little Way” provides us with a powerful model of simplicity and commitment to God. Thérèse of Lisieux: Wisdom’s Daughter explores the wisdom that the youngest Doctor of the Church shares with anyone who seeks to lead a more deeply spiritual, committed life. Thérèse’s wisdom was a gift of God—a gift that is now available for you to cherish.

From the acclaimed, controversial singer-songwriter Sinéad O’Connor comes a revelatory memoir of her fraught childhood, musical triumphs, fearless activism, and of the enduring power of song.   Blessed with a singular voice and a fiery temperament, Sinéad O’Connor rose to massive fame in the late 1980s and 1990s with a string of gold records. By the time she was twenty, she was world famous—living a rock star life out loud. From her trademark shaved head to her 1992 appearance on Saturday Night Live when she tore up Pope John Paul II’s photograph, Sinéad has fascinated and outraged millions.  In Rememberings, O’Connor recounts her painful tale of growing up in Dublin in a dysfunctional, abusive household. Inspired by a brother’s Bob Dylan records, she escaped into music. She relates her early forays with local Irish bands; we see Sinéad completing her first album while eight months pregnant, hanging with Rastas in the East Village, and soaring to unimaginable popularity with her cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2U.”   Intimate, replete with candid anecdotes and told in a singular form true to her unconventional career, Sinéad’s memoir is a remarkable chronicle of an enduring and influential artist.

Shareware Heroes is a comprehensive, meticulously researched exploration of an important and too-long overlooked chapter in video game historyShareware Heroes: The renegades who redefined gaming at the dawn of the internet takes listeners on a journey, from the beginnings of the shareware model in the early 1980s, the origins of the concept, even the name itself, and the rise of shareware's major players—the likes of id Software, Apogee, and Epic MegaGames—through to the significance of shareware for the "forgotten" systems—the Mac, Atari ST, Amiga—when commercial game publishers turned away from them. This book also charts the emergence of commercial shareware distributors like Educorp and the BBS/newsgroup sharing culture. And it explores how shareware developers plugged gaps in the video gaming market by creating games in niche and neglected genres like vertically-scrolling shoot-'em-ups (e.g. Raptor and Tyrian), or racing games (e.g. Wacky Wheels and Skunny Kart), or RPGs (God of Thunder and Realmz), until finally, as the video game market again grew and shifted, and major publishers took control, how the shareware system faded into the background and fell from memory.

In Uncovered, Leah Lax tells her story-beginning as a young teen who left her liberal, secular home for life as a Hasidic Jew and ending as a forty-something woman who has to abandon the only world she's known for thirty years in order to achieve personal freedom. In understated, crystalline prose, Lax details her experiences with arranged marriage, fundamentalist faith, and motherhood during her years with the Hasidim, and explores how her creative, sexual, and spiritual longings simmer beneath the surface throughout her time there. The first memoir to tell of a gay woman who spent years in the Hasidic fold, Uncovered is the moving story of Lax's journey toward finding a home where she truly belongs.
